Someone who studied planning in grad school, cities are within their police power to remove encampments that pose a health and safety hazard. I agree with the court’s decision. But we gotta do more to help the homeless find permanent housing through law and policy.

Now Ken, they aren’t criminalizing homelessness! They’re just criminalizing sleeping in public even under circumstances where’s there no other choice available to you except never sleeping and analogizing a human sleeping to an alcoholic drinking. Perfectly reasonable interpretation of the law.

2/2 a restaurant, there was nothing the city/government/police could do about it. NOW they will have the authority to move the homeless to shelters/housing regardless of the homeless persons desire to stay on the sidewalk and refuse assistance.

The problem has been, at least on the West coast (where this ruling originates) is that until this ruling, cities and governments could build all the shelters needed, could provide all the housing and support, but if the homeless preferred to camp in their tent on the sidewalk in front of 1/2

CRUEL!!!!! What about Homeless shelters? Helping people obtain an address and maybe a basic income . If they need counselling.. skills training, and support in order to find work.. it’s all an investment in the country and it’s future. It will pay in the long run.
