Haha yes. To be fair, creating more library space would be a most excellent thing for city councils to do in many places

With thanks to @tkingfisher.com for always having librarians' backs, in this case via thrillingly unequivocal tweets (which we quote)

Lisa (@lisagiven.bsky.social) and I were happy to answer The Conversation's call for this piece. Here we to contribute to a timeless librarian tradition: explaining weeding.

The current issue of Information Research publishes (OA) the papers of the upcoming Information Seeking in Context conference (Denmark, August).

It's a treat to have proceedings out so early! (Kudos to the journal team.) Lots of intriguing stuff here:

Last year, the International Federation of Library Associations announced that the 2024 World Library and Information Congress would be hosted in Dubai. The idea was scrapped due to pushback within the global library community.

Was one of the criticisms “findings should be presented separate from discussion”? If so, I have a couple of helpful sources for declining that one. Just lmk. Good luck!

Some people seem to think that invoking “Ranganathan’s Five Laws of Library Science” is just a bit of goofy, mockable nerdery. Maybe because of unexamined racism? I regard them as articulating a perfect, beautiful, powerful normative ideal for libraries. A banner worth marching under. 📚

This is predictable but so important: Pasteurizing milk kills the H5N1 bird flu virus that is circulating widely in dairy cattle. It's easy to take a 150-year-old technique that has saved countless lives for granted, but don't fool around with unpasteurized dairy products. 🧪

Thanks! Personally I've encountered both colleagues and patrons who are greatly put off by weeding. What I'm mulling over is why this obviously necessary practice sparks controversy and often outrage.

Thank you! I'm not doing a study -- just writing an explainer on request (which as you know librarians have done many, many times) and thinking about how to dig a bit deeper with it. "Reasons for weeding" bears repeating, but weeding isn't sensitive just because people don't understand it...

“politically charged responsibility any librarian will assume. Deselection can be introduced by the most practical of considerations yet may encounter along the way the most profound of philosophical concerns in LIS, such as censorship and loss to the community." (3/3)

"Because it entails most of the complexities of selection but is encumbered with the added significance that it pertains to judgments and investments already made, deselection is at best laden with potential for intense disagreement in interpretation of policy and, at worst, with the most (2/3)

There was some interest in this, so here's my favourite quote so far on weeding -- from Charles Osburn's historical review in The Library Quarterly (2006, p.41): "Deselection is a matter of undoing, not just doing. 🧵 ⬇️ 📚 📜 (1/3)
