It has certainly exposed me to a viewpoint I much too often take for granted. I'm genuinely grateful for all the people on here talking about their needs. Educating stupid people like me shouldn't be necessary but it seems like one of the better ways to make generational change

I can't imagine how much it would suck to, for example, work out the "isolate your voice so listeners don't hear background noise" trick, and then have that tucked away where no one will ever find it

All you need to arrest someone is probable goddamn cause, Merrick! Tell me how you didn't have that on Jan 21, Merrick! Oh, you're worried about speedy trial time? Okay, sure, here is your evidence: [motherfucker admits to committing crime on cross when you say he's too dumb to do crimes]

As a lawyer, I normally feel pretty cynical about my profession, but these last 2-3 years have been really rough. Bush v. Gore was a joke of a decision but it kinda stood alone for years. Now there's several of them a year

The fascist political project--and I guess that's now mainstream US Republicanism--is to make a mockery of the rule of law, of the very idea of rational policies practiced fairly for the common good. Getting the Supreme Court to destroy the rule of law, though, is just A+ comic book supervillainy

There is no problem that can't be solved with a high enough Deception score. And if it can't be solved that way you've just made the situation more screwed up which is fun too.

I do think it's interesting that they've created a Cocktail Party Intelligence. I know fuckall about anything, but I can fake it and blather about most things for 5 minutes. We're really credulous about this stuff, if you use the right vocabulary, syntax, and draw in a left-field connection.

One of the things that drove me crazy when I was doing criminal defense work was that The System had zero resources to keep kids from going astray.... but the instant they took one wrong step, there was an almost unlimited budget to destroy their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

I don't think there's anything wrong with nominating a war hero, especially at that time. The problem was that Kerry had no goddamn message. "Hey, remember how catastrophically Bush failed to keep you safe" seems intuitive but couldn't be politicized, as his opponent politicized the shit out of it

Haven't read McCarthy, but that's MAGA-as-oppressed-working-class. It's very much a (perverse) class identity formed in reaction to certain cultural signifiers of the effeminate, multi-racial, academia left-of-center. If you oppose those cultural traits, you're part of our (imagined) class

"There is another way” is not just a catchphrase but a reality we try to model in our movement to show the world that an alternative reality is possible. Last weekend 25 Israelis & Palestinians gathered in the desert for our first bi-national seminar since the start of the war.

A sizable fraction of the documents I draft as an attorney are almost boilerplate, and changing it up doesn't require much actual knowledge. But it requires *some* genuine knowledge and that's what makes this "AI" so embarrassing. They've simply built the world's largest parrot

It would be one thing if the government merely neglected these people, but Adams seems actively hostile. He's got a program to dismantle unnecessary scaffolding specifically because people sleep under it. And he was exploring how to make involuntary mental health commitment easier.

The thing about Garfield is that if you are 6-7 years old it is very funny! Granted, at that age one's sense of humor is, "I don't get it but I appreciate a culturally designated 'joke' has been made." But still, bringing happiness to a bunch of kids is an intrinsically good act.

That sounds awful! But it sounds like he knew to knock it off before making things even worse. Violating the Building Code carries a (usually nominal) fine, but the stop work orders are the big penalty b/c puts the project on hold and tends to mess up the owner's financing & timetable.

Depends on the license. Most skilled construction type work is directly licensed through DOB, which ultimately falls under mayoral authority. But deliberately flouting a stop work order would still be a mess for them.

The other possibility is that the DOB Commissioner is a mayoral appointee so Adams could call in favors or just replace the guy. But I assume that was already factored in when we decided to do this. NYCDOB! Statistically we have to get something right sometime!

IMO it's fine to be mad. The policy's been mostly fixed but that doesn't do anything for people who already served their time. But I do think Biden's drug policies in 2024 aren't what they were in 1994, and that is a good thing in federal criminal cases, where good things almost NEVER happen.

So, Biden's role in the 1994 crime bill was bad. But he directed Garland to seek sentences for crack offenders equal to those for powder cocaine. (They had been literally 100x worse prior to 2010 and 18x worse after.) The 1:1 ratio is a huge development that got no press at all

A cop has needs, including the need to occasionally kill darker-complected people with basically complete impunity. They can't do that working from home--they moved to the suburbs to get away from "those" people. You want them to pay $15 a day for a hunting license? In THIS economy?

Unfortunately it's a consequence of success--if the ONLY way to get elected is to be a Democrat, a lot of freaking useless hacks will suddenly decide to join the party. If you're lucky you can weed them out in a primary... but because they're hacks they prob have more $ and connections.

2/2 I've done some NYS crim law but never dealt with this particular issue, so maybe there's a wrinkle here. I guess Merchan could order the sentence to start after the election, but that seems more fraught than just doing it now

1/2 NY Crim Pro Law 460.40(1) - "Except as provided in subdivision two of this section, in no other case does the taking of an appeal, by either party, in and of itself stay the execution of any judgment, sentence or order of either a criminal court or an intermediate appellate court."

The thing that UTTERLY baffles me is that you can arrest someone on probable cause. And I'm pretty freaking sure they had that when Garland took office. Trump is such a pill that he'd force the speedy trial time issue (normally a dead letter in Fed ct) but we SAW HIM COMMIT THE CRIME ON TV

No, there's *nothing*. SCOTUS doesn't have jurisdiction until NY Court of Appeals renders a decision, likely after the election. I guess a court that can ignore plain text of 2A and 14A can try it, but if I were NY I wouldn't give a shit. Let the Supeme Court send its army to free him.
