Checked it out last October and had a blast. Definitely on my list of “horror movies to show friends who aren’t as into horror movies.”

More people need to take inspiration from Colour Out of Space and less from Call of Cthulhu.

Aster’s movies often come off to me as horror films for people who don’t regularly watch horror films. So much of Midsommar’s audience may be people never exposed to, say, Alien or The Shining and such. Not to say horror fans can’t enjoy them, but they appeal to non-horror watchers a lot.

See I always thought the Simon Necronomicon was an in-joke. As in saying “She has the wrong Necronomicon, and has no idea what she’s actually up against.”

They also tend to follow up by trying to denigrate his other themes and plot points. Yes, Lovecraft knew what he was talking about when he used the term “non-Euclidean geometry.” No, Lovecraft was not afraid of air conditioners.

That might be your problem. The Horus Heresy crowd tend to be on the super serious side, while 40k proper is more on the silly, over the top side. There’s loads more satire in 40k than 30k.

My cat’s reaction to loud noises like fireworks or thunder has always been to tense up on the first one and then chill out for the rest.

I’ve been getting bombared with overweight furry porn and I don’t understand it. I hit “see less like this” every time but it keeps coming.

Carl Kolchak is to paranormal detectives what Columbo is to murder detectives. Comes from nowhere (we know very little of his personal life), catches on sooner than anyone else, all while seeming like a bumbling fool. Only difference is Kolchak gets his hands dirty.

I remember when I found this out. Another example of Tyranids being named after feminine words. Harpy, harridan, dominatrix, Norm Queen, etc.

There are ways of making it work. A German adaptation of The Colour Out of Space made the film black and white EXCEPT for the Colour, which really conveyed how reality bending it was. Shooting Cthulhu with some kind of warping camera effect could do the same trick.

Oh man, House of Leaves is a trip. Took me about 3 years of picking it up and putting it down to read through it. It’s great but you have to be in the right mindset for it.

Haha, you got it! But yeah, a lot of what is said in the final sentence of the first paragraph takes on an ominous tone as you read on. The doors shut on their own, all the walls are actually at an angle and the floors of Hill House are slightly slanted.

There’s a big undercurrent of matronly behavior and domineering mothers in the novel, and I think “sensibly shut” is supposed to sound like something an upper class domineering mother would say. “Have some sense and close the door.”

Have you read the book? If you haven’t, part of the house’s haunting is that the doors close on their own after a while. I imagine the house is closing them out of a sense that leaving them open is rude. Like not closing the front door when you walk in.

I love when people complain about shit like this, as if part of Soulsborne’s philosophy isn’t using every trick you have to make a fight fair. Bloodborne has an entire covenant around getting more summons for bosses, but apparently you’re playing wrong if you use them.

Mainly due to a prolonged legal battle that only recently finished. Though I’m not sure why they didn’t do a sequel to the remake, which was quite good.

Yeah. Most of my group has been playing for years together and those who don’t are usually big horror fans. They play into tropes, avoid meta knowledge and are more excited to experience the story than to “win.” Not to say they don’t try, but we’ve had TPKs with no salt.

Calvinball definitely works for more people than others. For me CoC hits the right balance in terms of rules. Enough to cover most situations, but loose enough for improv.

Interesting read. I can’t say I agree. As someone who started with DnD and took a long while to properly get into CoC, I’ve enjoyed it and consider it one of my favorite systems (and I’ve played a lot). But some of that may be because I have a very story-minded group that makes it work so well.

Thoughts on the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG? How well do you think it reflects weird fiction and how important is it in keeping Lovecraft’s works in the popular consciousness?

Part of the appeal to me is that unlike a lot of people influenced by Lovecraft, he’s an overall weird fiction writer, not just cosmic horror or the more famous stuff. Like, he has his cosmic stuff, but he has more variety than that and is more original at it than most.
