Right about now, in 1863, came one of my favorite moments of the Battle of Gettysburg. Division commander Maj Gen Alex Hays, of Pittsburgh, seeing that his division had smashed the rebel attack, kissed his aide-de-camp, grabbed a reb flag, mounted his horse, and rode his line dragging it behind him

When you've seen the end of the world once ...
LeMay wanted to nuke the USSR as soon as WWII was over. It's such a weird historical thing that we didn't. Take any historical leader & tell them that they have that kind of overwhelming advantage, they use it. Especially knowing it's temporary.

The decision-making for Armageddon is a scary thought for me. At some point, logic goes out the window & it's entirely up to the personalities involved & the interpretation of mass amounts of data of questionable veracity. All in a window of minutes.

I'm sure it would. Just the destruction of the power grid ensures eventual meltdown. All the people dying would also do it. I mostly found the book's emphasis on how terrible the situation at the nuclear plant would be amusing, given the overall context. Bad? Sure. The worst thing happening? Nope.

My assumption is that anything inside the initial fireball is gone, reinforced concrete or not. A few million degrees or so should do the trick.
I do wonder how the containment would handle a nearby explosion, but outside the fireball. Is the overpressure enough to crush it? The winds?

Listening to Nuclear War:A Scenerio & I'm laughing at the Diablo Canyon bit. I'm pretty sure that if someone nukes a nuclear plant, there won't be anything left. The crater from a 100kt bomb would scoop out the entire facility & atomizer it. More fallout? Sure. Meltdown? Least of your concerns.

ACE is an interesting metric. In a typical year, strong storms don't form until much later, so ACE doesn't build up until then. This year, Beryl is incredibly strong for June/July & is driving that value up early.

When I think about what was sacrificed on this day in 1863 for this Republic, and what meaning Lincoln gave it...
Government of the people
By the people
And for the people
And then I read the news.
Sigh.

These are probably the most impressive ones I've seen. Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 & Hurricane Patricia in 2015. Just absolutely perfect storms.

Yep. Climate change has saved the current plants & makes the cost of new ones even worth discussing.

That's honestly surprising. I work with plenty of people that I know have a better grasp of science than the average person, but are positive it's all a hoax or is just natural variation.

Right? I had too much faith in our institutions in 2016. I thought Trump wouldn't be able to break us. I was so wrong. This is bad & I don't have any faith that our systems can withstand a President given carte blanche to do as they will.
