USC has been embarrassing, but Columbia bringing NYPD onto campus to arrest their own students is the kind of shit schools stopped doing in the 1960s because it came to be seen as a moral outrage and invited massive political resistance.
My favorite description of students is one I learned from E. O. Wilson*:
"Our students are colleagues with less knowledge."
*Wilson has other issues...but he was spot on here.
Customers were major donors or major corporations or the government, and students were never customers, they were products. When products don't behave how you want, they are defective and must be removed. Institutions that put out defective products lose customers (donors, grants, etc)
