One time someone said Ian Bogost was brave for writing an entire Atlantic column that was basically a subtweet of Janet H. Murray when they're in the same academic department, and Murray replied, "It'd be a lot braver if he didn't have me blocked." I realize this is extremely niche.

When George Washington was commanding the pre-U.S. army, he kept telling the troops to stop pooping in the creek they were all relying on for drinking water, since, you know, it was contaminating the water. They refused, on the grounds they were fighting for freedom. I think about this a lot.

Ppl are retweeting this and I just want to add that faxing is THE most annoying thing to do to your representatives. There are websites where you can fax for a small fee and those machines are LOUD and then at the very least they have to deal with all the print outs.

Somehow she does not really ever lose the entire water bottle, which would change my calculations. Once when I was working summer camps a kid managed to lose his shoes. It was a day camp. We never found them. Straight into a pocket dimension.

Sam Vimes Theory of Water Bottles: If I buy my kid a cheap water bottle, she will destroy it. If I buy my kid an expensive water bottle, she will destroy it BUT I can buy replacement parts for a fraction of the cost of even a cheap water bottle.

So, really my point is if you haven't heard from someone since 2019 and you wish to reach back out, it's often nice, especially if it's someone who like ... had reason for the pandemic to be extra stressful (like having small children, or being chronically ill or immunocompromised or pregnancy).

My best friend from grad school called today because, basically, a cryptic text from my brother made him think something was really wrong (it isn't), but anyhow, we hadn't spoken in several years because I talked to nobody like, the first 2 years of the pandemic and then was too embarrassed to call.
