Is it a hassle to work a recovery? Absolutely. It's a pain in the ass. It means no more going on autopilot. Setting goals and using skills every day. Lots of living on purpose, w/ eyes wide open.
Also: it's worth it.

"don't mind me just over here making ambition to counter the ambition you made to keep that OG ambition in check, and don't worry I've already put the order in for some more future ambition to counter my new ambition.. can't let THAT shit flounder around unchecked, amirite?!"

the thing with the say-a-prayer, evie salvation is that it avoids that work
"skip the work, just invoke godpower with this incantation"
instead of doing inner work to understand ourselves & gain 'third-eye' self-awareness
we use our mental energy doing theological gymnastics to "make it all work"

we can't force a person to change the way they think, those patterns are deep ruts in our neural pathways, we have to pick that apart & forge new ones ourselves
as X-ians we're taught our actions expose our motives, and it's not that they don't
it's that our motives are most often rooted in trauma

I relate to your friend, I threaded the needle between what my X-ian adults told me was important and actually helping & loving people for SO long, it was such a tangled mess I ended up ripping the whole thing apart rather than living in that tension any longer, there's so much freedom outside it

"we'll just imagine an even better God and then bingbangBOOM.. problem solved, our new god will make so much less sense than the last one, we have no choice but to believe and have a kind of destructive faith that isolates us from reality even *further*, making us easy for the leaders to manipulate"

per usual, there's a degree of truth in that view, but it's just so far from the WHOLE story

yeah it's pretty silly in retrospect, the way we police what we're exposed to, as if we're going to catch apostasy from another human, or a book
at the same time, that is the view of what happens from inside it, I get that.. "they started listening to the lies of the world!" and then we're gone 🤷

definitely behind the killing the infants and children episode but probably in front of when the priests stole women for themselves and convinced their dads "just let em go, fellas"

exactly, trauma begets trauma, we're just passing on our trauma from when we got guilted into letting them pick our life
(haven't used 'beget' in a while, thanks, Numbers! 😂)

yup, you stay away from stuff they can't handle
now I see it as 'our brains were so sheltered that we were just unpracticed at.. learning about the world'?
our egos were so un- used to taking those hits, it made us feel bad and we avoided it, but we had NO clue that's what we did

in another life I managed a X-ian camp
it was TOTALLY NORMAL in my background to tell kids about animal sacrifices & cross executions so the Jesus story would hook them
and when a speaker did that to the campers a volunteer asked 'why man! they're kids!'
I was so in it I couldn't see his point 😭

and so much of it is confirmation bias.. "I've never seen anything that makes a good case for why their take is wrong!"
but so much is hidden from you
then your eyes start to wander and they fear-monger you about whatever you're getting into - liberal theology, BIPOC perspectives, LGBTQ friends..

oh god, elders meetings were the woooorst 😂
they get so bent out of shape if there's just a smidge of non-conformity to their standard for faith
but in retrospect I think that each little occurrence of dissonance invokes fear in them that the whole thing's fake, it builds until they need a release

you never really get to look into that in X-ian institutions, because they have one of the monolithical doctrines tacked to them once they get that big, they only tell you about THAT one, then only later IF you leave do you look back and see what a mess the whole thing is

totally, if I'm self-aware of my own motivations (alot of us aren't) I can introduce the idea of religion, mine or others, to kids in a way that isn't coercive, then they can claim it as their own if-and-when it feels right to them, built on their own experiences and not just copying mine

I related alot to the post-religious journey in this article
when it's that intense as a kid it burns you out, and the thought of redeeming any of it is so disheartening, legit *triggering* even
but over time you can find healing and re-engage with spirituality, whatever that means to you 🥰

'I grew up super religious in a very conservative town, my folks were really kind of…”cult-like Christianity” is how I'd describe it. I went to church every week. We'd be out of town on vacation and we'd go to church, you know? So I was burned out on it for a long time, I became pretty atheist...'
