Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is IMO the funniest show of the past decade, but it's impossible to describe without it sounding like the cringiest thing ever, so I can't get anyone to watch it.

A physics conference is a great place to experience Euro 2024, bc basically every country is represented, but no one's enough of a soccer nut to start fights over it.

I get the logic here, but "the incumbent president chooses to run again despite health problems" was a pretty significant thing that happened in The West Wing.

Like 90% of secular attempts to justify social conservatism around family, marriage, divorce, etc, take the form "if we force people to go through the motions of a thing that successful people do it will make them successful" Equivalent of an unfunded $3000 wristwatch mandate

Majorana fermions are the worst; I thought the whole point of studying physics was to not have to care about silly mathematician things like "what field is this representation defined over?"

But can you do better? In

we use a self-consistent expansion in conjunction with RG to achieve an even better approximation for the anomalous dimensions of a nonlinear porous media equation. SCEs are amazing. They are non-perturbative, highly accurate & not hard to do.

The fact that Biden has delivered on left-wing policy far better than any president in generations but is widely despised by left-wing voters reflects more poorly on left-wing institutions and voters than on Biden. This is not a movement showing political maturity, and I say that as a left-winger

Once again, the SCOTUS regrets having caught the car on abortion. This time, to the extent that it has "ruled" anything at all in this case, it "rules" that it's a bad time to catch the abortion car again, so everyone should look away and allow them to say they didn't catch it after all.

I think Hitchens et al (whatever other issues you have with them) understand this extremely well, and their project is best read as an attempt to end the deference given to "religion" in Anglophone political life.

This is compounded by the fact that, if protesting outside a synagogue is widely seen as antisemitic, the people who show up to such a protest will be disproportionately antisemitic!

I think the best case for New Atheism is that, under the current norms of American politics, holding a morally reprehensible event inside a house of worship means that any protest against it will automatically backfire.

Honestly, if you wanted to write a critical piece on student activists, "these spoiled kids don't realize their campus is someone else's workplace" would be a pretty good angle. It's not like undergrads are consistently in favor of staff or grad student unionization efforts, either.

i have largely stopped arguing about this on social media because it isnโ€™t fruitful, but this finding gets to why you should be skeptical of theories that try to sideline or excise race from an explanation of the white rural turn toward reactionary politics news.cornell.edu/stories/2024...

Anyway, back to GNY models. These are some of the simplest quantum field theories you can build out of fermions, and they show up all over the place. Our paper shows that their critical points also have only two relevant operators. For the hep-th people, the Lagrangian looks like this: ๐Ÿงช โš›๏ธ 6/6

(The mathematical tools used to prove this came out of theoretical particle physics, which is why I get so mad when people claim it doesn't have applications.) ๐Ÿงช โš›๏ธ 5/n

Fun fact: Water is described by the same CFT as the 3D Ising model (it's called "critical universality" and it's very weird). So if you added a new axis to its phase diagram by varying the isotope balance or salt concentration or w/e, the critical point would ALSO turn into a line. ๐Ÿงช โš›๏ธ 4/n

This has important consequences for the phase diagram. If you generalize the model (say, by adding a chemical potential), the critical point grows into a LINE of critical points. It's sitting in a 3D phase space, but you only need 2 coordinates to find it. ๐Ÿงช โš›๏ธ 3/n

The number of parameters you have to tune ("codimension" in math terms) is, at most, the # of relevant operators in the corresponding CFT. The Ising model has 2 relevant operators, corresponding to temperature and field. That's why the critical point is a single point, and not, say, a line. ๐Ÿงช โš›๏ธ

New preprint this week! Briefly: There's a class of critical points, known as Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models, that show up a lot in condensed matter (superconductors, graphene, etc). We show that, in a system with a GNY point, you never need to tune more than 2 parameters to find it. ๐Ÿงช โš›๏ธ 1/n
