the Dems made a decision in 2016 to stake their future on the oldest and most experienced moderate members of the party and in doing so evicerated any possibility of a legitimate challenge from anyone else for years to come; they may have made an existential mistake, but they've left no other option

i just can't get over hearing that Biden must go from the same folks who loudly berated anyone who questioned Biden's viability in 2020... what happened to vote blue no matter who? oh, that was just bullshit all along? who would have guessed!?

in terms of an immediate replacement i guess that's right, but as for the nomination they could go with anyone couldn't they? it's all so unbelievably dumb... like these people didn't realize he'd be old and frail by now when they made him their anti-trump messiah in 2020

There's been a lot of talk about the end of the GOP as we know it if Trump loses, and there may be truth there, but man it's hard to imagine how the Dems recover if they blow this after having already gone through both 2016 and 2020. Like if you can't beat a convicted felon what are you even doing?

yes! although i think it has less to do with dissillusionment at the economy and more with the realization that all of our leaders are frauds and so why should we be too?

Thinking about this as I've watched the doompost -> "now's not the time for doomposting" -> "let ppl doompost" cycle. The thing is, no one is doing well. If you're using this site *at all*, you are Having a A Bad Time. Some grace is in order. We're gonna need each other no matter what happens.

That's because social media wasn't a thing back then. And he did step down under a Dem president, which is exactly what RBG should have done.

TRUE: Rules don't matter. Our institutions are imaginary. The GOP does whatever they want and the Dems abide.

Are you suggesting that the mass simultaneous dropout by all of the other major Dem primary candidates at once in order to rally around Biden was a happy coincidence and not the result of a "back room deal"?

What's scary is that he truly is their most popular guy... like among the folks that the Dem establishment actually support, who is even remotely as popular nation wide than Biden? And I ask that fully aware that Biden is not particularly popular himself. (And I am voting for him anyway.)

by the court's logic Biden could steal billions from the wealthy at gunpoint in order to fund healthcare without Congressional approval, but he can't get a watered down medicare-for-all bill passed without 60 senators' votes

I'm voting for the agent of empire who has the best chance of winning and is the least bad among their fellow agents of empire. I'm doing so because the left hasn't gotten its shit together (or was prevented from getting its shit together) to do much more than complain about the least bad option.

which is so odd as it's hard to imagine how a fully fascist USA would benefit them even in the near term; fascist governments are uniformly hostile to traditional media, aren't they?

If you're despairing, hopeless, can't see any path forward, that's completely normal. You still have to plant a garden. It helps to learn how to tend to something without knowing its final shape, to nurture and protect it, to do this day by day. Symbolically, of course, but also completely literally

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

People submit to contests like that in order to get feedback from pros. How else do you get real industry people to read your work if you're not a known writer?

It's really remarkable. This crowd went from ONLY BIDEN CAN WIN to PLEASE ANYONE BUT BIDEN in the first 15 minutes of that debate. And not because of any new information -- the pivot happened due to information their own media outlets have been whining about for months!

That sounds nice but have they ever done that? When was the last time the Dem establishment tried to build up a young up-and-comer? When Obama was coming up the establishment backed Hillary. The Dems are a gerontocracy and backing a young person is anathema to them.
