OH MY GOD.
“In fact, hair relaxers marketed to children in the United States have been found to contain the highest levels of five of the chemicals prohibited in the European Union.”
When those ex-hair models came out and said all they ever had was a press, whew. I felt bad for everyone I knew who's mamas had them sit with it in every couple weeks.
And this pisses me off cause it's further proof of the passive genocide we face but ppl will still play in our faces
It's because no lye is gentler on the scalp but requires more chemicals than lye based relaxers. I love Linda's work but to note: people have been sounding the alarm on this for years. The disconnect, to her point, is why we still let it be used on children.
When i first saw this i was thinking, “bet they’re gonna say it causes hair loss,” but the real answer is of course much worse.
The long answer is a lot of seemingly mundane stuff is bad, but a lot of stuff marketed to BIPOC communities are usually worse.
Whenever it's finally measured, I'm never surprised but always stunned by the scale of the impact of environmental racism interlocked with so many other expressions of anti-blackness like hair discrimination. Good the FDA is finally acting, but it could have been so much sooner.
Every year that passes I'm weirdly grateful that my family was too broke for relaxers when I was a child, and by the time I could make that choice, I chose no. Absolutely no judgment, but also: the sacrifice
At this point I have to wonder if there's marketing value in putting "contains nothing banned in the EU" on products for sale in the US.
I don't think there's anything like the CE mark for this class of products though.
