This isn't convincing. Previous generations of Israelis, including Dayan, had lived through far more violent and consequential conflicts than the Intifadas or Oct 7; not only did '48 and '67 cause more deaths, the state faced genuine existential danger in at least the former.

Meanwhile, modern Israelis grow up in a first-world country with broad international recognition. To them, the state of Israel is a fait accompli. One may as well object to the existence of the sky. To Palestinians, the wounds are still fresh, but Israelis have learned to forget.

Dayan and his generation were keenly aware of the price of Israel's creation in ways that no modern Israeli (younger than 90) can be. Dayan personally ordered the expulsion and razing of numerous towns - he knew how recently and at what cost his country had come to be.

Resistance movements being hijacked by their most oppressive/authoritarian elements is an unfortunate pattern in history. Russia in 1917, Iran in 1979, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Vietnam...it's distressing to think about the same thing happening in Palestine.
