It refuses to define its own borders. There are other territorial disputes in the world, but no other country is ambiguous about *its own territorial claims* the way Israel is.

just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

They're not gonna deport 20 million people. They're gonna deport the labor organizers, the guys who ask for raises, the guys who leave the pork processing plant to get a better job elsewhere. Our agriculture sector runs on immigrant labor and draconian immigration laws are about giving bosses power

This isn't convincing. Previous generations of Israelis, including Dayan, had lived through far more violent and consequential conflicts than the Intifadas or Oct 7; not only did '48 and '67 cause more deaths, the state faced genuine existential danger in at least the former.

Meanwhile, modern Israelis grow up in a first-world country with broad international recognition. To them, the state of Israel is a fait accompli. One may as well object to the existence of the sky. To Palestinians, the wounds are still fresh, but Israelis have learned to forget.

Dayan and his generation were keenly aware of the price of Israel's creation in ways that no modern Israeli (younger than 90) can be. Dayan personally ordered the expulsion and razing of numerous towns - he knew how recently and at what cost his country had come to be.

Why do Israel supporters use such violent language to describe the one state model? Was East Germany "eradicated"?

Hopefully not launch an incredibly risky rescue operation with a sizable chance of them getting blown up. I'd prefer something akin to how the hostages were rescued from Iran

I never fail to be gobsmacked by the number of people who seem to genuinely believe that Palestinians would be a-ok with all the murder, land theft, oppression, and ethnic cleansing if only it was *someone else doing it*

Yet another essay from Edsall framing main political problem as “polarization”. I will boldly state we should not want to meet in the middle on the questions like whether black peoples votes should count. Its in fact bad to not feel “polarized” toward the party that answers “no” to that question

I think this is the case with basically any kind of bigotry. There are things that are obviously antisemitic/racist/misogynistic/homophobic/etc., but at the margins any definition is malleable

It bothers me a lot, not just because I see people using it to excuse antisemitism, but because I’ve seen variations of it used to excuse homophobia and transphobia and Islamophobia and anti-Blackness and every other bigotry.
Bad minorities don’t cause bigotry. Bigots do.

Resistance movements being hijacked by their most oppressive/authoritarian elements is an unfortunate pattern in history. Russia in 1917, Iran in 1979, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Vietnam...it's distressing to think about the same thing happening in Palestine.
