I have written extensively about the shortcomings of American political journalism. But I don't view the last week as a huge media failure. Two very important questions are being discussed: 1. Is the president up to four more years on the job? 2. Can he be an effective candidate?

If there were a contested convention, the Dems would not be unified during that period and of course that would be covered by the media as a time of disunity. But would Whitmer-Booker be polling ahead of Trump by Sept 10? I think that's the real question. I don't know the answer to it.

Glad to see this piece on the New Popular Front from Piketty and Cagé. While almost all the attention has been on the gains by the right, the success of a unified left with an ambitious program seems like just as an important story from the French elections. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I think that the people who ignored or yelled at those who pointed out that A LOT of voters thought Biden was too old for another term should do some self-reflection but I don't think they will have the humility to do so.

Ha. Yes. I have received quite a few, "Maybe you were right" messages in the last 24 hours. But I would rather not be right about this! I wish Biden had been better. Alas. But I have been saying this since January 2022. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Back the blue, shut down the border, and be silent about Gaza because democracy is on the line while offering endless olive branches and mewling retorts to the people loudly proclaiming their aim to wrecking the shit.

My favorite part about tonight was when Biden implemented a draconian border policy that violates human rights and international law and Trump and the CNN moderators still tagged teamed to accuse him of basically giving citizenship and a million dollars each to everyone south of the Rio Grande

Not going to fully rehash this for the 100th time, but yes, civil disobedience by def is unlawful. Universities and many other institutions have since the 60s permitted a certain level of civil disobedience so as to avoid students being killed by cops and seeming draconian. This spring was a shift.

"U.S. police departments have gotten smaller—and the violent crime rate is still plummeting. So what is going on?" What's ALWAYS gone on. Cops do not stop crime. They never have. Real "tough on crime" measures are well-funded schools, free daycare, and mental health services. Always have been.

87% of USian children are enrolled in public schools. These "voucher," school choice, private school conversations take up so much space. Focus on improving the educational experiences of the schools where the vast majority of students are: those are PUBLIC schools.
