They're not gonna deport 20 million people. They're gonna deport the labor organizers, the guys who ask for raises, the guys who leave the pork processing plant to get a better job elsewhere. Our agriculture sector runs on immigrant labor and draconian immigration laws are about giving bosses power
I think for once I disagree. I’m sure that the bosses pulling the lever for Trump are thinking “he’s not actually gonna ruin me by deporting my entire workforce, he’s just gonna yank the troublemakers” but I think that’s deeply underestimating how serious the Miller and the vdare crowd are.
I think they might try, soon realizing they don't understand logistics or consequence, so pack them into "labor camps" to "save" business and economy. Many will die of disease, malnutrition, and revolt. Then, when others ask questions there will be some final solution to hide "incompetence".
in md the eastern shore makes an annual exception to its general attitude on immigration and pleads for more foreign worker visas because apparently no citizen is willing to work all day picking crabs
and also attack anyone they think is somehow a thorn in their side, and it'll be on the people being attacked to suffer the costs of fighting charges & proving they are not undocumented
it's a vehicle for infinite attacks & harassment, with outright racism substituting for evidentiary cause
I think I disagree with you here. No doubt that is where things start out but I think they will give the crazies what they want - it will distract from the lack of policy. Page from the Jim Crow playbook
They will almost certainly come after trans ppl and political opponents at some point, because once you begin mass arrests, you can't just shut that machine off. It demands fresh victims every day.
That’s the first line of the Niemoller poem but it keeps going. Stephen Miller isn’t proposing an evil but coldly rational program of calculated deportations, they want purges and ethnic cleansing
I disagree somewhat. I think that’s what party elites and donors want, the problem is that the true believers run the joint now, and they actually do want to deport/kill their perceived enemies.
It’ll start as what you describe, but it’s a hair’s width from getting waaaaay worse.
Ask Alabama how well squeezing the spent end of the economic tube goes. Crops rotted. They relented. Didn’t touch anyone up the chain.
Except to award them fewer health, safety & child labor restrictions.
The bosses aren’t going to have much power when there’s no labor and they suddenly have to pay people a living wage to pick strawberries. There’s no way the donor class will stand for this.
There's always the possibility of converting them into forced labor. You round up undocumented immigrants (or people who look like they might be undocumented immigrants) and put them into camps, but then you implement work programs, for <insert justification>. Who's gonna stop them?
Don’t fall into the, ‘They’re not actually’ trap with this group of people. Taking them at their word is correct, and of they didn’t do what they promised before it wasn’t for lack of trying, it was usually just because of clownish ineptitude, which we can’t count on forever.
