Just saw the comment about life skills; I spent more time in the workings of a city and working on a farm than I did in school, acquiring more life skills than I think I would have in school. It depends on the learner’s drive, and willingness to learn things when they actually need them.

I was homeschooled until grade 12, and I only took interest in anything at almost 16, but I’m working towards becoming a journalist, filmmaker, zinester, and writer. I’m very confident that I’ll be able to do video journalism due to the amount of time I had to study it in “secondary” education.

It depends on your parents’ ability to facilitate your learning needs, sometimes their willingness to nudge you along and motivate you, but it also depends a lot on the unschooler’s drive and passions.

Yeah, I hadn’t until g12, and I went for two reasons: because it was pretty much my last chance at a school experience, and because it was an alt school where you do internships for 2 days a week, and in-school learning the other 3. It’s definitely a very different learning experience.

I was homeschooled until g7, then unschooled until g11, and then went to public school for g12. I loved both homeschooling and unschooling. It gives you more freedom to follow your passions. It also allows you to learn things at your own pace and in environments and methods that you learn best with.
