Yesterday on the Million Dollar Highway headed into Ouray my partner spotted this porcupine on a little peninsula in the creek along the road. It was super exciting for us. There were hummingbirds all over the place too, but not holding still enough for me to photograph.

Synchronous fireflies at Elkmont Campground, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The fireflies tend to hang around darker hollows between clumps of vegetation. The flashes themselves are not as synchronized as dark periods, but there are waves of flashes when seeing them in large numbers.

The removal of four huge dams on northern CA's Klamath River has freed up thousands of acres of land that were forcibly taken from Indigenous people a century ago to create the dam reservoirs. Today, the Shasta got 2800 acres of their homeland back.

Just a few fireflies at Elkmont Campground in Smoky Mountains National Park. These are almost all male synchronous fireflies and they synchronize by going dark at once to check for responses from potential mates. πŸ™πŸŒΏπŸ§ͺπŸ“· (Photinus carolinus)

The Navy also has two land locked ships, one in New Mexico and one in New Jersey. I was especially intrigued to learn of the one in NM since there is no coast in the state.
