I mean there's a mistranslation of post-classical Latin from an actual book from the 1500s involved as well but alas, yeah, there wasn't anyone in medieval or early modern England running around with an athame šŸ«  So much of that 30s-50s stuff became Set Lore that it feels at least sort of legit!

I was brainstorming a word for a magical sword-shaped implement in a story and decided to check the etymology of "athame". Huge lol, that word turns out to date to 1954 (1931 for arthame). Gerald "bullshit" Gardner strikes again

once upon a time this type of thing was supposed to be my master's thesis topic lol (anything I knew 20 years ago is undoubtedly incorrect now, not to mention I've forgotten it, and I also don't know if there are different terms used in Taiwan and the PRC)
