You're looking at the only known fossilized skeleton of a sauropod dino called "Amargasaurus", recovered from the La Amarga Formation in Argentina. One of the smallest sauropods at 13 m in length & 2-4 tons in weight, the distinctive 'neural spines' projecting from the vertebrae are a puzzle.

Juneteenth is a good day to remind people that slavery was a founding principle of the US economy. WALL STREET started as a slave market, FANEUIL HALL hosted a slave market & is named for a slave trader. All of the first 12 US Presidents owned slaves except John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

Let's talk about Mr. Bones & one of his lesser discoveries, gastroliths. The real name of this American paleontologist was Barnum Brown, named by his parents for the circus showman. He was sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History to gather fossils for their collections.

Prepping scanning electron microscopy samples involves sputter coating with gold in a special vacuum chamber. The gold helps to reflect the electron beam used for imaging, reduces charge build-up that could arc in the sample. So that's why this tiny (dead) spider is 24 karats of awesome.

“The male in that video had clasped a large female, clearly alive, who then apparently died in his embrace… He let go and pursued the other female in the box. After about two minutes, however, the ‘dead’ female revived and started moving again.”

Why do animal eyes glow at night? Why do cats, raccoons, even cows & dogs look like they're powering up laser vision? What you're seeing is the REFLECTION of light from a flashlight/camera flash. Nocturnal animals have a tissue called TAPETUM LUCIDUM that acts like a mirror.

Let's talk about the real-life Dr. Frankenstein: Giovanni Aldini. Nephew to Luigi Galvani, who demonstrated that electric charges could make a frog's leg twitch, Aldini wanted to defend his uncle's idea of "animal magnetism" against their intellectual rival, Alessandro Volta.

I'm currently giving thanks to the Patron Saint of Headache Relief, Dr Stewart Adams, who developed 2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propionic acid for Boots UK. From clinical trial candidate "BTS 8402" in 1961 to 200,000 tons/year consumed globally today: Bless you ibuprofen for making the headache go away.

In 1951, the French town of Pont-Saint-Esprit experienced poisoning through bread, leading to 7 deaths and 50+ people institutionalized. It is generally believed to be due to ergot poisoning, a fungus that affects rye and causes illness, hallucinations, and death, or maybe...the CIA?

Falling into category three: Allenburys Throat Pastilles, featuring diamorphine (heroin) and cocaine.

For about 1300 years, many in medicine relied on the studies and teachings of physician, surgeon, and philosopher Galen (born 129CE). Interestingly, Galen’s knowledge largely came from animals like pigs because human dissection was banned in Ancient Rome.

It's because they hunt and eat the Arizona bark scorpion, the most venomous scorpion in North America. (I hate scorpions) They hunt without echolocation, using their giant ears to hear insect movements, flying 3-6 feet above the desert surface. They can eat up to half their body weight per night.
