Shared an image of this fossil (tweeted yrs ago). Below from Doug Jones' tweet: paleos "...uncovered a 5 Ma gomphothere (Rhynchotherium) w/a fossil turtle wedged in the mandible. And before you ask - no, the ancient elephant didn't choke on the turtle and die..."

My least favorite response from science editors is that a study or story is “incremental.” Hey, guess what? All science is incremental! It’s always building on what we thought we knew yesterday and putting forward hypotheses that need testing. It’s a mistake to only look for big, “certain” things.

There’s always been a needle to thread between significant and interesting within science and what the public gets excited for. But it sucks to be doing this for 13 years and have pitches turned down because it’s not T. rex or charismatic megafauna again. There is so much more out there.

It drives me up the wall when I pitch a science story to a science-focused publication and their response is “We’ll pass on this because our engagement team doesn’t think it’s interesting enough.” Not just from one client, but several. What’s considered worthy is determined by what might get clicks

Disappointed to see an archaeologist I recognise accept the Dan David Prize, especially as the genocide against Palestinians continues with very little word from others in archaeology.

Esmat Elhalaby’s words on the matter are still relevant.

Science is clearly political. The more we ignore this, the more we allow political decisions in which science is suppressed to maximize corporate profits at the sacrifice of people's health and lives. Speak up!

From SCOTUS ruling that it's ok to ignore scientists, to the minimizing of COVID, the growing rejection of vaccines, the increasing restrictions on abortion access, and the lack of sufficient action on climate, the US is really is going all in on science denial. Dark times.

I'm happy that the paper about my class on Historically Excluded and Underrepresented Scientists is now published. When I get back from Alaska, I will put the syllabus and other materials on my website and link to that here on Bluesky. In the meantime, enjoy! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Recently, I was peer reviewing a paper, and it cited one of my papers. Except... it wasn't anything I had written. The title sounds like something I'd write. It included coauthors I work with, and was in a journal I've published in. But it wasn't real. AI is not good for science.

it’s #ToothyTuesday! narwhals are known for their “horn,” but it’s NOT a horn - it’s a tooth! 🦷✨

male narwhals usu have 1 tusk, usu on L side, up to 9 ft long, but 2-tusk M have been reported

tusks are used in fighting, maybe attracting mates, stunning fishy prey, & sensory function in its env!

Reminds me again of this event from 2017. Quote: "... work out how a smart person can have views like that." Because being highly educated is not the same thing as being a decent human being. Francis Galton was a trash human being who was apparently good at statistics and meteorology.

Lately, journalists have asked if scientists didn't warn us enough, or didn't know how bad climate change would be.

Scientists did their jobs. It's fossil fuel companies who lied about climate impacts FOR DECADES. They're to blame for these heat waves.

So the parallels between narwhal and unicorn horns are plainly obvious. But has anyone considered that perhaps unicorn horns are also elongated incisors that jut out awkwardly and asymmetrically from the mouth, rather than the forehead? If I were an artist I'd draw it but hopefully you get the idea
