These throwable fire extinguishers seem like a real-life example of xkcd.com/937 — they have really good reviews from everyone except the few people who tried using them to put out fires
My grandfather had the real deal in his machine shed. Dating back to the dawn of synthetic chemistry, whatever was in those glass globes could probably make the fire grow a second head and horns or whatever
Reminds me of reviews I saw for travel insurance. Lots of excellent reviews about the low cost and how easy the buying process was. On actual payments, not so much.
On the positive side, a review marked "Most Helpful" by 136 people at the time I looked said: "These do not work, and do not put out fires" right away.
In all seriousness, I have always been aggravated by people who write positive reviews of things they haven't yet used.
"Arrived yesterday, haven't used it yet but it seems good!!"
Just, why?!
Bought a house 25 years ago with the old tymie version of these in the garage. I said, "Nifty!". My wife looked them up, we promptly brought them to the fire department for disposal. Then we called her mother because she was an antique dealer that had a few in her shop and storage in her basement.
Which does appear to work. I considered mounting one in my workshop over my Ender 3 FDM printer before they worked out the issues with the controller that would on rare occasions cause it to burst into flame.
I am also somewhat concerned there is NO listing of what the “fire extinguishing liquid” is and that they are plastic and not glass containers. The antique ones contained carbon tetrachloride. The even older ones were salt water with ammonium chloride. Both work best in confined spaces
The fun thing about working at firehouse museum is that sometimes you open a display case and you find a bunch of these old fire extinguisher bombs from the 40s and you have to call the Fire departments hazmat team because they are filled with mercury.
As a firefighter I can say: throwable fire extinguishers are absolutely useless 99% of the time. And those few designs that work you don't want to use at home.
Stay with the good old fire extinguisher (+ fire blanket). Much more controllable and reliable.
Throwable fire grenades used to be a thing. They were often set in attractive wall sconces where if you weren't there to hurl them at the fire, the heat would (theoretically) cause the genade to drop.
Also, often filled with toxic carbon tetrachloride, which becomes very nasty phosgene when burned.
I wonder if:
1) The fine print says "novelty purposes only, not intended for fire safety"
2) They are violating laws against selling emergency equipment which is useless in an emergency
Unsure if it will do any good, but I spent the time to read through most of the reviews and report those that said nothing about the product itself.
"Haven't used it yet!" is a pretty bad review.
