Saying that having a dog is good practice for raising a child is not untrue, but it’s as true as saying that riding a razor scooter will teach you how to drive a greyhound bus

It’s pretty similar. Have to get up same time every day, potty, feed, potty, play, pick up toys… Just like taking care of a child.

I always thought a better practice was getting a cat. They don’t listen, knock stuff over just because, and if you turn your back on them they’ll eat whatever is guaranteed to obstruct their small intestine.

A dog does train you well in the specific skill of “a fucked up substance just appeared and I’m just cleaning it up without a second’s pause”

Gotta work better than starting with a cat.

I disagree but mostly because I had a very difficult dog and a very easy child.

Unless it's a Jack Russell terrier or other insanely energetic and smart breed, in which case it's more like a dune buggy than a razor scooter. The comparison still applies, though.

Difficult dog vs easy child might have some overlap

the single biggest value add, i think, is that it jumpstarts the big requirements of getting a lot more comfortable with poop and puke than you were before

lol I started adopting dogs 25 years ago thinking it would help me prepare for kids and all I have now is two senior rescue dogs because I am totally utter in love with dogs and don’t want much more (other than my husband I guess) lol

what we are really talking about, as with the flour bag exercise in high school, is to see if it dies I advise couples piloting a marriage project to start with a nice plant

Driving a greyhound bus is really good practice for raising a kid, though.
