The fact that a second Trump administration is even a POSSIBILITY is such a tremendous failure on the part of every segment of our political elites. He could have been impeached, convicted, and permanently excluded on the very day. He could have been arrested the second he left office. Etc., etc.
Biden ran on the promise that he alone could defeat Trump. He did not defeat Trump. He gave him time to regroup. And that was a choice that he and his hand-picked attorney general made, for which they are solely responsible.
The constant refrains from him and his supporters have so conditioned us to be fearful of “criminalizing politics” that it hasn’t dawned on most that he’s simply trying to politicize criminality. And treason. 59 presidential elections in this country’s history, and he’s the first to try a putsch.
Yeah I'm not sure why it's ok for them to call for revenge against their political opponents for made-up crimes but not ok for us to call for vengeance for actual crimes (see also Obama's attempt to heal the nation or whatever by not prosecuting W & everyone in his admin for Iraq).
It's also like - how is a discussion of the possibility that this failure is part of why Biden is so unpopular totally absent from our political media? A major reason people turn against democracy, historically, is that it stops delivering anything.
Obama could have also nipped this shit in the bud before it even started. He knew Russia was helping Trump’s campaign and sat on his hands bc he thought Hillary would win anyway.
I'm with Levitsky/Ziblatt. When a minority party gains structural overrepresentation and then abdicates before starting to play constitutional hardball and engage in lawmakers, this is the result. Biden has a role, but this is on the GOP.
If the GOP weren’t a corrupt gang of thieves, the RNC chair could’ve held a presser day after he announced in 2015 when he made all those racist statements about Mexicans and said, “he’s a citizen and can run of course, but he will not do so as a republican.” But that would require actual values.
It's important to recognize the distinction between the people who failed to do the basic minimum of their jobs and the people who failed to rise to the emergency by not going beyond routine.
