AMS is more or less the same as MMP, though I'd argue the latter has fewer electorate/local seats

Limerick just had a directly elected mayor with about 90k votes, though lots of people didn't vote that far down the list

STV still disadvantages smaller parties like the greens, and seems to still produce a lot of hyperlocal fixes rather than improving national policy. See this a lot in health in Ireland, where local reps maintain popularity through advocating for a specific person's surgery, rather than system change

I couldn't quite work out how they'd do it, but watching the Irish hand count STV is a real thing, as they literally carry transfers to a different desk

I did my class speech on PR in my first year of high school, backing MMP which NZ adopted the following year. Still prefer it to STV/transferable vote systems as used in eg Ireland

Doonbeg is between Kilkee and Lahinch, and Spanish point and white strand as well. Kilkee is calmer for younger children. There are show caves (doolin and ailwee) and you could day trip to an Aran Island. Clare and Inisheer are also peak Father Ted if that's your jam

Bunratty Folk Park near Shannon very good for families. Pizza at Vincenzo's or Doh in Limerick. Cliffs of Moher definitely a thing to do. Lots of other more low key suggestions. Lots of beaches in Clare but depends what you're looking for. The beach in front of Drumpf's Doonbeg golf club is lovely

All interesting to see a website calculating carbon footprint of websites. Predictably, it seems that all the big name sites, as well as most of works official websites rank very poorly www.websitecarbon.com

Policies to help people walk and cycle create public health benefits as much as 100 times greater than their costs. This research strongly suggests Low Traffic Neighbourhoods generate a very high return on investment.

With Aotearoa's anti-tariff approach to everything, should that mean that it should be flooded with cheap EVs while everyone else is putting their tariffs up?

We are especially bad at recognizing mid-career faculty who have made significant contributions to the improvement of departments, colleges, and universities. I argued it wouldn't harm us a bit to expand the number of recognitions we award and to think about how we compensate these folks.

IKEA is the world's largest consumer of timber in the world.

Its demand is constantly expanding. As is its output of fast furniture.

Buy. Throw away. Buy again.

A recent documentary by Arte highlights the impact of IKEA's over-consumption on forests.

I'm a bit unclear why they wouldn't just front with that. Or go with even less information. If you're not going to say what it is exactly, why sub-specify to abdominal? Are they keen to exclude thoracic and cranial that bad, but still want to be vague??

Good thread. The Irish solution of course is to team up with a very rich external entity* to own and manage almost all their school buildings, and for the most part run the schools as well *The Catholic Church, if it isn't obvious, owns and runs 98.5% of schools In RoI
