I cannot emphasize this enough:
The knee-jerk assumption that disabled people are faking is not a result of how many fakers there are out there.
The belief that there are so many fakers out there is a result of the knee-jerk assumption that disabled people are faking.
Decades of trying to convince myself and others that I'm "not that disabled", partly because it was easier to go along with people ignoring my limitations and encouraging me to do so, culminated in a stroke that has left me far more disabled and made it more immediately dangerous to ignore them.
even if there were people faking it, I'd much rather someone faking it got something they didn't need than a disabled person went without because they couldn't meet some stupid requirements...!
Yes thank you. There's just a mean assumption that we are lying malingering jerks who want to leech on everyone. Wheeeeee I love to be called a burden and also be in intense pain

A few months ago, someone posted on IG, "People don't fake sick. They fake well. Read that again." And that hit, because I'm constantly pushing myself to get things done, hiding my exhaustion & pain. Then people will say I'm not really disabled.
I volunteered for a local disabled charity a few years ago helping people with forms and some tribunal work. This is purely anecdotal but my biggest hurdle was persuading people to be honest about how bad their condition was so they weren't talking themselves out of well deserved points
I injured myself once, and had to use crutches for a few months. There was at least one colleague that thought I was faking, although he didn't say it to my face...
I have seen this close up several times. Kid told by school system & teachers that she couldn’t be dyslexic (despite dx!) bc, w great effort, she did well in school. 🙃 Former NCAA football player with permafucked hip and a handicapped car tag accused of cheating because tall and strong and young. 🤡
I’ve seen a lot of vocal support for the idea of accessible workplaces paired with skepticism any time an accommodation creates an inconvenience for anyone but the one requiring it.
Narcissism is endemic in the US and narcissists are frauds (they have no self) so they work from the (wrong) assumption that everyone is just like themselves (frauds looking to get as much out of a situation or system as they can) narcissists also seek positions of power over others-dangerous
You wouldn't believe the amount of times I got
"How are you autistic? You went to college! Got good grades! You can't be autistic!"
Also that mentalitiy 'inspired' my uncle to tell a therapist not to tell me I'm autistic because "I would use it as a crutch to not improve"
"But, but, but, but, You went through college and got high grades! You can't have autism" My racist uncle kept telling me, telling the therapist that I shouldn't be diagnosed
It sucked, really hard
