A brief RIP to the good era of The Daily Beast, the best newsroom I've ever worked in. We beat everybody and made the big papers very mad about it. We also did it with a lot of empathy and care and without the soullessness of a Murdochian tabloid. I guess that's over. Anyway, it was a good website.

I oversimplified. I also know people who got hired because of their posts. But that was the "blogosphere" era. Early boards and forums gave birth to great things too. But the specific term communities has been basically a sales spin on "recurring unique users". No one under sub-editor means it

I'm hell deadbent on removing them on my publisher media after 16 years. If I get away with it, I'm sure all my writers will thank me, including the women who had to remove their twitter handles due to harassment. Not that erasing the comments will fix that, but at least we won't enable them

Journalists write with another journalists in mind, they absolutely don't write "for the readers". This is one of my hills to die on. "Communities" is actually a thing that 100% is born from the sales side -except when the commenters drag the advertiser's name through the mud-, not the newsroom

First thing you learn in a newsroom is that readers are douchebags. It's extremely embed in newspapers culture. I was lucky/unlucky enough to always land in the Letters to the editor section, so I got a pretty early taste of what the "audience" was about before youtube comments even existed
