Luke. Librarian. Nerd. Good at words. Terrible at Bluesky. He/him. Bi/pan/whatever.
And again, what do you replace it with? What's the end goal of "good guys" fighting "bad guys"? What are the heroes meant to do?
Vigilante justice mirrors and even portrays the problems with real-life police, so that's not a solution!
In fantasy the cops can be good and the system can work. 😆

I guess I'm not seeing the problem. The policing I'm talking about is fantasy people performing a societal function in a fantasy world. That's MUCH different than the real-life local force. Any real-life implications and problems only exist if they're explicitly added.

And replace it with what? Most heroes have the goal of jailing their foes, which makes them de facto law enforcement. That doesn't necessarily give them the baggage that we might attribute to modern real-world police forces.
The Powerpuff Girls are police (but not that kind), you know? 😆

That's my wording. Though ideally they will at some point arrest VENOM so they can be tried in an international court, so... how else do you describe that? 😄

It was the 80s, so "a billion-dollar high-tech org to rescue lost pet chickens" accurately describes some episodes of MASK too. 😆

The lore says MASK is an independent police force that is employed by the Peaceful Nations Alliance (their version of the UN) for the express purpose of counteracting the mercenary and criminal activities of VENOM.

And their jobs. Including/especially Brad Turner, a famous rock musician who repeatedly left just before going on stage or even right in the middle of his shows. It's hilarious as a bit, but think about all the paying (refunded) audiences and how quickly promoters would drop him and etc. 😆

In practical terms MASK has a similar setup to Batman: The Brave and the Bold. A main character gets most of the attention and the other heroes are really only seen in relation to them.
Heck, I genuinely think the show spends more time with the "home life" of VENOM than non-Trakker MASK agents. 🤣

No, but that's with a major caveat: the Trakker household is the only one we spend any amount of time with. Most of the heroes are primarily seen on missions and are underdeveloped as characters.

I'll grant that I'm reading into it, and more to the point reading *what I want* into it. But it feels notable that I also don't have to make excuses or sideline anything that might interfere with my conclusions. 😄

I love the couple of times Matt isn't there and no one understands Bruce and the show itself seems to stop just short of saying "they have a special relationship". 🤣

Matt Trakker's best friend is Bruce Sato, a man who speaks in riddles that only Matt understands.
But no one could infer anything from that. Ha ha no of course not. Why would they, did someone say something? 🤫

Yup. Matt's a rich white thirtysomething bachelor with a private life, wink-nudge.
There are a few episodes where Matt and Gloria go on dates, but it's always in service to a plot and there's no romance. She just looks like his go-to "plus one" to rich people functions.

EVs will soon become so much cheaper than ICEs that everyone will ditch their gas cars all at once, sending the used car market into a death spiral. The last time this happened, Hollywood spent about a decade demolishing the excess stock via cheap TV car chases—a paradise we could regain!

Not to my knowledge. The version on streaming version is the same one that Shout! Factory licensed for DVD, which lacks those despite being advertised as the "complete series".

Unfortunately some of the "diversity" like Bruce Sato's Confucian riddles was clearly in the media bible, as it appears even in the media that predates the cartoon. Ali and Nevada just add to the misguided representation that was there from the beginning.

Ali and Nevada are indeed latecomers. Both are part of the "Racing Series" in the third year of the toys and only appear in the second season of the cartoon, which is something of a soft reboot.

I maintain that Matt Trakker can also be read as gay VERY easily. They were clearly going for "Bruce Wayne meets James Bond", but combining the traits of those characters just ends up leaning into every part of them that reads as queer. 😄

My favorite Roscoe Lee Browne voice role is Kingpin on the Fox Spider-Man cartoon. When the 2003 Daredevil movie came out, lots of Very Smart People thought Kingpin shouldn't be Black pointed to that as a "correct" portrayal, clearly having no idea that the role was effectively whiteface.

I love MASK and appreciate that it at least tried to to some representation. But MASK was also pretty terrible at characterization so a lot of the representation is just broad stereotypes. FFS, Bruce Sato's entire character is "speaks in Confucian riddles for no reason". 😕

It gets worse, the superpower they came up with for Nevada was "totem". His mask literally shoots little totem poles. The only use of it I recall is him blasting them across a road so they would act as a spike strip and pop some tires.
I suppose it's better than "firewater" or "thunderstick". 🙃

Maybe. Probably even. I've seen a lot of speculation and inferences drawn. My take is that Burroughs was pretty adept at situational humor. I think it amused him to withhold the specifics so no one could say John Carter WASN'T flapping in the Martian breeze. 😄

Yeah. Dynamite has done some topless Dejah Thoris covers, but to my knowledge there's never been a corresponding "five-armed" Martian. And I don't think anything even close to official that just went for it in the story itself.

Regardless, I do think that's the right artistic direction to take the hair. It's something of a signature look for the character, but realism would give it a weird/uncanny valley effect. Go the other direction, lean into having it look fake, and the eye just accepts it.

It's honestly kind of astounding how many people grasp "infinite growth isn't possible" but don't realize that it applies to EVERY part of capitalism.
I'm including myself btw. It took me a long time to understand, and in many ways I'm still grappling with it.
