Gosh, now wondering if we could have had a truce months ago without the American government propping up this murderous campaign through arms shipments

there's a commercial for a dish soap cleaner going on now and I s2g have actually appreciated it for exactly that reason. Just a lady on a white background telling you that using this cleaning product makes your life better (your kids will talk to you again)

You're Not The One continues to be an absolutely absurd song. Not only is it itself one of my all time favs, the production team's discography was insanely stacked *BEFORE* Daniel Nigro produced both Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo's latest albums

And yeah, it breaks the metaphor when gender nonconformity/HRT is such a gentle ramp by contrast. The movie almost seems like its setting up a cautionary tale of Maddy mishandling an egg crack, but doesn't want to let the focus leave Owen

the planetarium monologue is interesting - I got the sense she had Owen for the first 90% of it but kept pushing just a bit too far for his comfort. The burial totally works in that context as her own personal crucible, but once outside I sympathize with Owen being uncomfortable

Okay I'll also hop on here when I've written something obviously. I wrote about "I Saw the TV Glow" and relatability, and how that relates to how the film grounds itself (or fails to) in its various ambiguities www.patreon.com/posts/if-the...

University of Washington president Ana Mari Cauce is retiring, and uhhhhhh I did not know this fact. This line in the Seattle Times story slightly modifies them referring to her as a child "refugee".

Exactly, in a slightly different world I could have continued being drip fed sports, but it's surprising how willing these orgs have been, with all these little frictions to nudge me out the door. It's like Elon making X impossible to use if you're not logged in. Don't mind if I do!

Bruenig's recurring interest as a writer is this "if you really meant it" thought experiment stuff, which is superficially critical of religious politics, but fundamentally always pretends we're starting with a clean slate.

The clarifying power of the statement "the purpose of the system is what it does" is that it moves discussion beyond endless handwringing about intentions. The Christian right's goal as a political project is to subjugate women. Given that, the only useful question is "so then what?".

I think it's worse than that - considering the amount of space dedicated to it in the piece, I think the op ed author genuinely thinks Spurlock's PR statement itself was a revelatory piece of accountability

Anyways, I still love the movie (+ soundtrack and score) and saw it twice. But that part, I haven't figured out if my assumptions are wrong or what. (bonus ❤️ for Brigette Lundy-Paine and her planetarium monologue)

1, 2, and 3 are all directly expository, which means the hallway VHS scene w Caroline Polachek and 4 are shockingly load bearing for the later (fantastic!) scene at Double Lunch when Maddy starts pulling the curtain back about The Pink Opaque

Owen and Maddy have four scenes, total before she disappears. 1) Election Night, 2) the first sleepover, 3) the high school bleachers, 4) the second sleepover.

Instead, the movie seems so absolutely committed to portraying a lead character with dissociated dysphoria, that Owen is more or less a flat line from beginning to end. So at the end, TV Glow felt like it leaned more on my own trans experience to cover Owens part of the Isabel/Tara/Maddy dynamic.

To me this matters because if we see Owen becoming more of himself through sublimated fandom, I buy that he ever COULD make the third act choice Maddy presents. Owen understands the beauty and power of the road in front of him, but rejects it for a familiar, but degrading mediocrity.

It's confusing as well and makes me think I'm misinterpreting the movie because TV Glow seemingly goes out of its way to deny Owen and Maddy building a relationship around their common fandom. The lead chars are grades apart, and we're told never talk except for the VHS dead drops.

But Justice Smith after two Ambien, doing a voice over while Owen stares impassively at the screen, as a means to pass this info on feels underwritten.

There's a ton I love about I Saw The TV Glow, but there's one major thing sticking at me about Owen's character. It feels a bit silly to say cold, but I'm not sure the movie really figured out how to convey he's a fan of The Pink Opaque. The script certainly has him SAY it.

In that case forcing the issue is still best, I think. Citizens fundamentally engaging with the structure of their democratic Republic is good in of itself, and builds our capacity to push back on things as egregious as you note.

It's a valid concern, but the great news is that the larger the voting pool, the less likely for any given bad actor to be able to affect the outcome. Think how it's easier for a 5-5 tie for 10 voters, versus 70 mil-70 mil when there are 140 million. The EC actually makes this worse today!

Not needed! Jon Walker pointed out in 2020 that sufficient remaining states allow ballot initiatives, that with a (relatively) modest expenditure for the millionaire class this can be done without R legislative approval

Both his books are great, and I'm amazed an author like Bevins exists with 1) access to American journalism that 2) has an interest in the mechanics of social movements, and 3) put in the insane effort to survey activists across nations to draw common lessons. Hitting all three is unicorn stuff

An under leveraged thing about Chait is that his whole thing as a pundit is he just reads media articles. That's all he does, he's not an *actual* expert at anything. This schmo thinking other people need to expand their horizons is really something.
