Is Hush performing plastic surgery on Killer Croc so he'll kidnap a kid for ransom money that Catwoman will steal to give to Poison Ivy so she'll run away to Metropolis so Bruce Wayne will run into Tommy Elliott there so they can be friends again but then he fakes his death — okay it's nonsensical.

The movie that became BATMAN '89 was announced in 1980. Since BLADE RUNNER was also produced by WB, I bet Kane was sniffing around the studio lot at the time.

Hmmm, you said fiction! Ummmmmmmm Amélie incorporates the death of Princess Diana as a catalyst to kick off the plot.

"Horrific" might not be the exact word for it, but it's amazing how ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN was released just four years after Watergate and immediately became the canonical take. Along those lines, THE SOCIAL NETWORK feels more and more relevant every day.

TRUTH is a perfect example of working with already existing material. Isaiah Bradley is the first *Captain America*, not Steve Rogers. It's given more weight because of adding nuance to already existing iconography. Not the same if Isaiah Bradley was original creation Major Patriot or something.

What makes the WATCHMEN connection important is Hooded Justice is Superman without being Superman. He's the "first superhero" of WATCHMEN, so a Superman analog. The Tulsa Massacre sequence makes this explicit. His parents hide him in a carriage to escape, a nod to baby Kal-El's rocket from Krypton.

Which is to say, it's better to think of characters in phases of life rather than ages. Nightwing described himself in a recent issue as being the age when "most people are paying off student loans." That works!

Right, there's this period in the early '00s when she went to University of Chicago and was a bartender. Maybe she was 21 (legal age differs). Sure! But then in Astonishing X-Men #1 in 2004, Kitty is clearly written as mid to late 20s, maybe even with a Master's Degree to be teaching.

More like she's 23 at minimum (graduated college, has been a teacher). You can reconcile all that with her fellow X-Men characters, kind of, but not with other corners of Marvel like Spidey.

And everyone gets 14 years but the time is proportioned out differently. You might think Peter Parker was 22 in 1979 when he graduated college. But Kitty Pryde was introduced in 1980 at 13 years old. If six years passed between '79 and now to make Peter 28, that would make Kitty 19. No way she's 19!

Yeah, in Al Ewing's IMMORTAL HULK #21, which came out in 2019, he chronicles the history of General Fortean. Let's be generous and say the left picture is around 1962 our time. So 14 years sliding timeline pass between '62 and '19.

The thing about Cyclops in particular is he is old. In spirit! He both got thrown forward into the future to raise his son for over a decade, and his teenage self got brought forward to hang out for a few years. He may be 28 on paper but he's experienced much more.

My kids watched Strange Magic on Disney+ and it got me to thinking about how George Lucas included love potions in an earlier story — Willow! So I wrote about it.

The worst part about IDENTITY CRISIS is it not only signals a pivot into darker territory, it retcons the past to also have been twisted and morally gray.

What’s great about THE STEPFATHER is because it was co-written by Donald Westlake, it’s both a slasher and a crime thriller. You see a lot of the machinations of how Jerry’s grifting works.

James Cameron does this well. TERMINATOR=Reese background. T2=Sarah's fears of Armageddon push her to attack Dyson. ALIENS=exposition, conflict (movie starts with nightmare, ends with Ripley getting good sleep), motherhood theme ("chestburster" comes out of stomach): www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfFj...

The '80s was very in-flux visually. You look at something like 48 HOURS in 1982 and it screams '70s. But just a year later Tony Scott comes on the scene with THE HUNGER and defines the look of the rest of the decade.

Yeah I think it started — correct me if I’m wrong — because Larsen had Doctor Octopus defeat Hulk in an issue of Spider-Man. And David retaliated by having Hulk easily defeat Doc Ock in a humiliating way. Then it escalated from there!

Charlie Huston's JOE PITT CASE FILES, a five-book series about a vampire private detective, has really great fight scenes. Written in first person, present tense, they tend to get into kind of stream-of-consciousness run-on sentences during fights that makes everything feel very blunt and immediate.
