Hang on, Ravioli *might* just be unable to distinguish between rats [DO NOT EAT] and hypothetical mouse [IS...SMALL RAT?]. I think it's overall more likely Ravioli is the culprit, though, given that she loves to chomp things.

I think it's British cuisine adopted to a winter climate. If it's 40 below in Winnipeg in January, you don't want subtle flavours or spicy adventures, you want bland hot food and lots of it. Poutine doesn't make *any* sense outside a winter context, for example.

PERFORMATIVE DESPAIR IS NOT A POLITICAL STRATEGY. Do not conjure your own imagined demise. In particular, don't do it collectively, on a communication system meant to amplify emotional contagion. (simpler/more esoteric: don't do death magic at collective scale on your own minds, for fuck's sake)

Ah, then it's got to be the city itself. I've only been there once, but it definitely is somewhere with its own distinct culture. Wavelength? All the great world cities have their own flavor.

Yeah, every time a podcast asks me for advice for writers just starting out, I tell them to make sure the lawyer who looks over their contracts specializes in entertainment law, no, the family lawyer WILL NOT WORK. That is not what the hosts expect, but wtf do I know about writing?

I don't feel I'm unreasonable to be worried about a future Trump who is Trump...but, you know, competent and focused--but a) current trump is dangerous enough. And b) I feel like a competent Trump suddenly doesn't have either the charisma or the foreign backing.

Damn, I wish I remembered my lit course from the mid 90's better, because I remember there was more going on with Collins when we pulled back a little, or looked at some of his personal work, or other writings, It was a real dude, you are *so close* to getting it thing.

It's been easier to see from the outside, I think. I'm a Canadian who was living outside North America when 9/11 happened, and...it's hard to convey just how clear it was that the US was going into A Dark Place and was not going to be Listening to Anybody for a long time.

It's crazy how spot on he was. In 1992 he basically called 2020's era Google maps and that's like, the *least* of it. [He has flaws as a writer and Seveneves has that weird extended character assassination of a Hilary Clinton analogue, so he's not perfect in every sense, but...

The current estimated sale price of our house is a 71% increase over when we bought it in 2010 and I agree that "bananas" is the correct word for it. And if we wanted to sell, we'd have to screen buyers *incredibly* carefully to weed out investors intending to rent it for outrageous prices.
