This is particularly important to understand because Trumpist authoritarianism is the descendent of Jim Crow far more than say Hitler or Pinochet or Orban, and it's going to look a lot more like 1930s Mississippi than 1930s Berlin.

"Executive Time" fell out of the coverage of Donald Trump in the most incredible way. Nobody writing about his quest to become president again ever mentions the fact that he hated the job when he had it and he couldn't and wouldn't really do it!

SCOTUS' ruling on social media was a bigger deal than it first seemed. Content moderation and ranking algorithms are now First Amendment-protected speech, and that has big implications for the internet. My newsletter today: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Two things can be true: 1. The mental acuity of the person with the nuclear codes is a BIG deal. The media should report on it. Full stop. 2. The threat to democracy is also real and the overall balance of coverage must take that context into account.

Right-wing legal talking heads are focusing on arguing that it is RIDICULOUS to say that a second-term Trump will be empowered by immunity to do horrific things, while carefully preparing to argue in seven months that it is RIGHT that Trump do horrific things which aren’t actually horrific anyway.

It is right in the very narrow sense that Congress could not, e.g., criminalize granting a pardon without the approval of the House Speaker. The point is SCOTUS decided to drive a truck through that crack.

Right, this is where the action is. Some level of immunity around “core presidential powers” is inherent in the powers themselves (otherwise Congress could revoke or take over presidential powers by ordinary statute)—that’s not the radical part—but none of this other crap flows from that.

Yes, maybe there's some clever version of hardball Biden's team can come up with, something that doesn't involve ordering assassinations. But one thing he *should* be able to say is "I reject the idea that the president is above the law, and I vow never to use this illegitimate 'immunity' defense."

The effective approach is don’t engage in performative theater with bad faith actors. A timed speaking contest against trained con artists is not a good way to inform the public about science.

Just at the most basic level it is really unhealthy to have to thought about Donald Trump as much as everyone in America has over the last nine or so years. Spending a decade of my life thinking about a super boring, super shitty crook and all the bad stuff he's doing or might do. It's embarrassing.

I don’t know, this seems like a genuinely special case. Normally debates don’t matter because who got off a better zinger or had a good policy argument comes out in the wash by November, but that’s not really the issue here. It’s reinforcing Biden’s most serious preexisting vulnerability.

There have no doubt been cycles when even highly politically engaged folks were somewhat on the fence and a debate might nudge them one way or another. This is not one of those cycles.

Again, the problem is: What’s the audience for a televised debate? Politically engaged people who are interested in policy details & fact checks made up their minds long, long ago. Debates are for folks who don’t follow politics and tune in at the end for a vibe check.

this idea that the bible was a significant influence on the constitution is obviously widespread but i've always been struck by insane it is. not that evidence matters to these people but if there's anything we know for certain about the 1787 convention it's that the bible had nothing to do with it.

It's hard not to feel irate while reading this. Companies catering to authoritarians like to defend themselves by shrugging and say "it's local law." But this isn't just about the law. Microsoft is going above and beyond even its competitors *within China* in censoring material online. Shameful.

Compare the splashy $100 million spend to the $20 million abortion funds spent from July 2021 to June 2022 to make sure real people get the abortions they seek, and they usually don't cover the full cost that a caller faces nor help every caller in need.
