Crypto has been doing this for sure. I’ve heard a lot about west Texas crypto mines running on associated gas from oil wells. Have you seen the same for large non-crypto data centers?

Policy proposal: data centers (and maybe all loads above a certain MW threshold) are competitive wholesale customers. Utilities can choose to sell them power at market / FERC regulated rates, but strict guidelines to protect regulated retail customers for costs incurred for off-system sales.

They will (as they do) just build on site backup gen. Generally means the utility should not have to plan to guarantee them firm service unless they’re willing to bear the cost of full deliverability themselves.

Me neither! Which is why I sit on the editorial board of the newly launched Journal of Catastrophe Risk and Resilience, specifically because I think these risk products are important and shouldn't live in a black box.

Wind & solar, which grew 55% from 2019 to 2023 to supply 14% of US electricity, produced $259B in climate & clean air benefits, finds LBNL researchers. That's $143/MWh for wind & $100/MWh for solar or $36/MWh & $17/MWh if considering air pollution only.

So Tesla could get a new CEO *and* have $56 billion more to reinvest into the company?
