I feel like you can start to see loss of representativeness around 95W where the mean really starts cutting across the members. I wonder if clustering would be helpful here and present multiple mean/median tracks as members diverge into discrete modes. A Sankey-diagram style solution.

I feel like there is some value in recognizing where the mean track starts to cut across ensemble members rather than follow them. I wonder if there is a simple way to quantify this as a measurement of ensemble mean representativeness of its members.

I have zero tolerance for this kind of foisting of journal responsibilities onto the authors. Not only is it gatekeeping new authors from the journal who won't have five (!) recommendations, it invites peer review rings. I wrote the thing! It's YOUR job to find reviewers!

Pushback against this kind of policy is long overdue, imo. If I'm supposed to store and maintain and distribute data for an article I'm paying to publish, forever, it's on the journal to pay for the cost of it and I can quote them a rate for my time and the cost of the storage.

It's somehow not enough for authors to pay a fee and hand over manuscript IPR to publish, and for reviewers to work for free, and for the journal to paywall unless you pay ANOTHER fee. We also have to be part-time datastore caretakers forever, and do it in an easily accessible way?

I have no idea where the time/effort/money is supposed to come from for these data avail tasks. Agencies don't want to fund hardware and also don't want to fund a datastore subscription into perpetuity, and I'm somehow supposed to be the steward of this data for decades when I'm not paid for it?

Someone at the journal-level or funding agency-level needs to take on this responsibility. I think the idea that by publishing you are expected to carry an indefinite duty to store and distribute this data yourself is unnecessarily burdensome. I'm not paid for this work after it is published.

No argument there, but I think characterizing the pushback on Biden as “but he’s not perfect” is insincere and not helpful. The criticisms are specific and aren’t without merit, even if the remedy isn’t completely clear.

Yeah it makes me think about feature selection in, say, linear inverse modeling. Usually I would avoid adding a feature that is clearly correlated to another feature, but maybe I need to rethink that strategy somewhat.
