Remember to give yourself a break from social if youā€™re feeling overwhelmed. Thereā€™s a lot happening right now, and sometimes it helps to connect with people over it, and sometimes it doesnā€™t. Always prioritize your well being!

A new study in Nature Communications led by Weiskopf et al. reveals a critical link between #biodiversity loss and global carbon storage.
As plant diversity declines due to climate and land use change, we risk losing vital carbon sinks. ā¤µļøšŸŒšŸ§Ŗ

Here's the good news, though. When we cut our carbon emissions through efficiency, electrification, and clean energy, we also cut air pollution! Yet another example of why climate solutions are absolutely essential for our health today and our future tomorrow.

Oh, so apparently some members of tbe IU Board of Trustees were not consulted ā€” and donā€™t agree with ā€” the letter expressing the Boardā€™s ā€œunitedā€ and ā€œfullā€ support for President Whitten that came out hours after the faculty vote of no confidence.

Very cool and I like the important follow-on point about simply increasing replication sample size can often lead to crud.

The garden a day after the solstice. Nice time of year: plenty to harvest but not so much that thereā€™s a frantic need to freeze, can, and dehydrate.

When itā€™s hot and the dew point is relatively elevated, it feels ā€œhumidā€ to us mammals. But, to a plant that can lose a lot of water due to large vapor pressure deficits, itā€™s dangerously dry. Many crops prefer VPD to be around 10 hPa.

Even though the Sun is never directly overhead at latitudes outside the tropics, there's still plenty of extraterrestrial solar radiation (Kex) at higher latitudes because Kex is proportional to sin(solar elevation). Here at 39.2Ā°N, it will be 96% of the solar constant at solar noon today. #solstice

Some advice after 25 years of work in Egypt/living in AL: 1) Liquid IV is best electrolyte/salt hydration drink (or Pedialyte) 2)If overheated, cool shower, then colder bath (slow temp decrease) 3) Freeze bottles of water. Put between legs (crotch)+ under armpits+ at neck. Will cool blood rapidly

When 500 mb heights exceed records, as may be the case this week over the mid-Atlantic region, it means that on no other day (over the last 74 years) has the atmospheric layer from the surface to about halfway up been hotter.

As @jonathanstea.bsky.social points out here, a strong predictor of trolling is the tendency to derive pleasure or enjoyment from being cruel or demeaning to others. By blocking, it deprives them of that pleasure.

"35 years of cumulative PV module waste (2016ā€“2050) is dwarfed by waste generated by fossil fuel energy & other common waste streams"

the first thing I learned about climate change is that when it really kicks in (it's already started, but it can get much much worse) is that it goes non linear and all our models and predictions fail because we've changed the environment so much they're no longer applicable

This is the key point for me. I like interacting with students and collabs in summer so I do that, but there's a reason that TT administrators are on 12-month salaries. I'm not paid to do some of that during summer, so I choose not to. Others may not have that luxury so I also help them when I can.
