Some of us turned ourselves inside out to try to warn elected Dems about this and got blown off and called names like "Blue Anon" by Very Important People for our pains. And this is what you reap when you sow hubris.

I think the senior people haven't updated their decades-old priors (which were probably never that good anyway) and the junior and middle ranks are loaded with bright policy people who loved debate club in HS/college and think there's actually a referee and rules and voters care about micro details.

I swear to god, I get so tired of being called a naive leftist who wants a pony by people confused by a strategy I’ve been aware of since Clinton was president t.

In 2016 maybe one could argue that they had no reason to believe that decorum in politics would change that drastically, but damn that was EIGHT LONG ASS YEARS AGO

I find the response "he wasn't trying to do it" the most annoying. If I dive off a cliff but have never heard of cliff diving...

A TV format that all but encourages a steady trot of bullshit sans fact checking helps!

The fact that Biden was prepped to lose his first reelection debate the exact same way that Obama, Bush, Clinton and Reagan did theirs is a hell of an indictment of his team.

what i found so frustrating was that they actually kept reiterating like, smaller versions of the questions before the response so it would be almost impossible to address his off topic replies without sounding like you’re avoiding the question.

(uh whoops, i have been using this wrong for years… or rather i have been using it to refer to a subset of it sorta… a gish gallup but while intentionally muddying the waters with lies and self-countered arguments and the like)

Never ever debate a Nazi. No point. They don't actually believe in the process. They dont argue in good faith. All it does is platform a diatribe of lies. Which is the opposite of why debates exist. Its not healthy for a democracy. It just becomes another norm and institution to be destroyed.

The first thing I thought when I tuned in to the debate was “who told Biden it was a good idea to fact check Trump?” It’s almost always a bad idea, but it’s Democrats default setting for some reason. Their need to be “right” is so destructive.
