I honestly think that the fact that Biden improved throughout the first debate & is still doing well makes me think that something about Democratic debate prep is plain busted. The same thing happened for Al Gore at his first debate. The same thing happened for Barack Obama's first debate in 2012.
Gore won his debate until the pundits couldn’t stop talking about his sighs at Bush BS. The press hated wonky Gore and melted over Dubya’s cute nicknames for them (Candy Crowley, anyone?). It’s when I realized substance didn’t matter in debates and Beltway pundits suck. It hasn’t changed.
I’m talking myself into this being deliberate. Obama won, Gore damn near won, maybe rope-a-doping Republicans pays off in the long run and the people who are impressed by policy talk are sated in the first debate
That's a reach. No one working Al Gore's debate prep had an effect this time. This is like when networks say "well, the Browns are 1-8 since 1965 against the Cowboys in Dallas, so it's an uphill battle for them"
who care what happened in 2000, it's 2024: replace the candidate.
No one prepping him should've been expecting Biden to recite any numbers or detailed facts tonight.
When he ditched the gaffe-y detail flubs and made his responses about how terrible Trump would be for the country and how great of a country the US is, he got better.
