That op-ed is written by a guy who votes, and the throughline of his previous op-eds is that he wants there to be a king who punishes dirty whores who get abortions. Specifically a king, so it's just a divinely appointed fact of life and he doesn't have to feel bad about being a violent misogynist.

(as for my personal take? Barring lots of new information, he definitely did it, and the reporting was unnecessarily misleading, I can't help but think the number of people coming away with inaccurate understanding of ultimately irrelevant facts was an intentional choice)

It's a rights management group being shitty and fishing for $$. (Not necessarily the the org they represent) It lets them bring in a little $, and at the end of the year/quarter report back to the client that they stoped people "abusing" the trademark, aren't they good lawyers.
