Most doctorate level people I know are REALLY smart in one subject and clueless in many others. ChatGPT has doctorate level traits in confidently stating wrong answers.

I mean to be fair I think I would be about as good at coming up with the right answers. But it would take me longer and I'd hesitate a lot more and I'd finally just mutter something about how I didn't pick this field for its mastery of US geography, rather than giving wrong answers.

ChatGPT once told me I wrote Good Omens. Pretty sure my name is not Terry Pratchett and have never met @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com. I did, however, frame the restraining order.

Er, not to be rude, and I am a Canadian girl, but I think that list is not complete. Or correct: Hawaii?

Oh, it's all totally fine because it's inserted the boilerplate "ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important info." So bleak.

Also, to point out the obvious, having a doctorate has very little to do with intelligence. And how is "intelligence" defined anyway? I can tell you, as an expert in human learning, no one really knows. Areas have been defined, but it's like labeling genre - there's lots of unclear crossover

I have so many of these examples it's not even funny. These stochastic parrots aren't capable of reasoning, even much less intelligence. We've done a really bad disservice to the world using the words "artificial intelligence" to describe these gadgets.

It'll give us the same advice, but in academic speech patterns with citations that may or may not be accurate depending on the LLM's path do decide what a real source should look like. So if Stormfront starts trending, we'll get academic eugenics.

As someone who works in a university this means it will know everything about one hyper-specific/hyper-niche topics, and be dumb enough to somehow burn the building down trying to pour milk into their breakfast cereal about almost everything else. You dont attain that level of knowledge without loss
