And it's absolutely insane that this is even up for discussion because BEFORE Covid, plenty of people wore masks. Just not a large portion of the population. And no one cared. Mask bans are 100% a culture war bullshit stance, because masks work.
Mask bans used to be culture war - DeSantis saying "you health-wanters are hippies I hate. Everything is FINE."
Mayors proposing this now are not DeSantis. They are trying to keep people from hiding identities while committing crimes. Different motivation. Maybe wrong, but not culture warriors.
It’s one thing to be against forcing masks. I get that. I hated wearing masks cuz they were always uncomfortable. But I still wore them for the safety of everyone around me. It’s another thing entirely to *ban* them? Who’s even seriously insane enough to think that’s a good idea?
The only reason I would ever comply is because it would be like Larry David’s Atlanta arrest: inconvenient to get back for proceedings. Otherwise, I am confident that I would NEVER be convicted—even though nominally in violation.
True. And I'm not usually given to tinfoil hat theories but I do wonder if this is partially about facial recognition software in public places (because it works less well on masked faces obvs...)
Just to say, it's not "insane". It's logical and in line with rational agendas. Shitty rational agendas, but still rational agendas.
Not trying to start a fight; we just don't need to combat one kind of ableism with another.
Wonder if the proposed LA ban will open up city to a good number of ADA suits. Don’t see how they can tell someone with autoimmune disorder or going through cancer treatments that they can’t mask in public.
The thing that suggested to me early on that COVID would be a thing was seeing a sign at the JAL counter at Haneda saying “we are wearing masks to protect you from COVID-19” and I said shit, if people in Japan feel they need to explain why they’re wearing masks, this could be a thing.
I knew people in like 2010 who masked in public because they were one chemo, or were recent transplant recipients! It feels like the anti mask people have totally memory holed that
i think a lot of people don't realize that others who still wear masks aren't paranoic... and it might be because they have loved ones who would probably die if they caught covid off them.
(I think the current push has as much or more to do with the fact masks foil facial recognition technology, and that this is a whole new hair-on-fire development..)
Its also complex too considering that Mask Bans happened during the Black Lives Matter protests, and now we see Mask Bans pop up during Stop the Genocide protests.
Mask Bans were unpopular with democrats with Covid-19 but became popular for 'em as soon as police needed Mask Bans to arrest protestors
playing yakuza games and seeing how normalized masking is in japan and then comparing it to the US where red faced men scream at you for wearing one, is pretty depressing bsky.app/profile/mjpa...
Think LA is considering ban just for protesters, not everyone, to try and apprehend vandals or the violent, no?
Government health and safety power (police powers) require them to be acting in interest of public health and benefit, so banning masks across board is nonsensical in that frame.
all I can think about are all the people i know who have cancer now since covid, let alone every other autoimmune /reduced immunity person now, and half of these ppl are democrats
I remember taking the train back from New York in mid-February 2020, and there was a lady in our car wearing a mask. I'd heard about COVID but it was still kinda out on the periphery, and I was like "I hope she doesn't know something I don't know."
Narrator: She did!
I get this kind of stupid a lot of places but LA has a whole lot of Asian folks who were wearing masks when sick to prevent getting other people sick for DECADES before C19. This is just dumbfuckery there.
I do think there's a trauma society has around masking, which makes folks uncomfortable. It's associated with shit times and forced restrictions/privations. A difference between an hyperindividualist culture and a communal culture.
I just feel astonished like, did no one ever go in for a medical/dental procedure of any kind before covid? People have been using masks all our lives to protect us and we never cared until ????? Did they all forget or ?????????
In France we did have a mask ban since 2010, but it was because of a different bit of anti-war bullshit: our traditional islamophobia.
The law said it was a mask ban, but the debate around it clearly was about banning burqas.
And as a general notice:
If you’re only using a mask at a protest so you can hide the illegal activity you’re committing whilst piggybacking on other people’s otherwise non-violent protests? You’re a special kind of asshole.
In other news, wastewater tests (which deliver delayed data, because the CDC stupidly stopped daily tracking) now show that at least in L.A. where some testing is done, infections are up 25% over the prior week’s results. Hospitalizations and deaths are also on the rise again.
Wear a mask anyway.
