Active shooter training at work was mostly about how there’s nothing much you can do so just don’t scare any cops who might arrive by screaming or crying.

I found a new argument to work from home for the jobs where it's an option - no active shooter drills and roughly 0% chance of you place of employment (well, where you sit and work) being targeted for violence. Yes, I realize how ridiculous yet a teeny bit realistic that is.

Yeah, it’s basically run with your hands straight up and pray they don’t riddle your ass with bullets.

Our state sanctioned training was “run hide fight”. The fight bit was traumatic to read. Basically they recommend that you turn into a feral fast zombie and try to gouge their eyes out and fight “unfair”.

This makes me wonder: has the last ditch fight back strategy ever worked for any workplace shooting? & yeah I attended a seminar last summer on my own dime bc I'm responsible for the people who report to me

I worked in an elementary school (recently retired). We were told to pile desks in front of the door & teach the kids to throw textbooks & office supplies at the shooter when they announced an active shooter over the intercom.

Reminds me of the CIA "school of the Americas" training future dictators. They ran a course called "torture and interrogation countermeasures" where they taught every known torture. A student asked "what's the point of this class if there aren't countermeasures?" The others just laughed at him.

We had run/hide/fight training at my church (the Christian nationalists in town kind of hate us) and no part of it involved assuming the cops would be there at all.

Yeah. Not like cops would do anything anyway. Any random trans person with a gun will protect you and your rights better than a cop

Almost every time I see a news reel on a shooting there is a clip of cops, guns held at ready, marching a line of victims out of the building with their hands up like they are at fault for being shot at. The cops can't save anyone but they sure can make that trauma worse.

Honestly … yeah. And the open floor plan of the modern office, with sleek, glass walls around conference rooms and duck in rooms are another reason to just text goodbye to your loved ones.
