I actually felt more elated about the French result than the British one. Why? Because the French rejection of the far-right was exactly that. A rejection of the far-right. I will not feel the same about Britain until the abomination of a far-right Brexit has been rejected by the governing party.

I support everything in their letter. But will be interesting to see if Starmer tries to appease Reform voters. We need a change of language as well as practice, drop ‘illegal’ immigrants, use ‘irregular’ routes, ‘save lives’ not ‘stop the boats’ which is code for ‘stop-people-with-brown-skin’.

So let me get this straight. The centre right win the EU election. The centre left are in power in the UK, Germany, Spain. In Poland and Czechia, the centre right sent hard right governments packing. In France, the left and centre hold the line against the fash. Tell me again how Europe has fallen.

There are several things Labour could do now to mend the broken system. Cap donations. Regulate anonymous think tanks masquerading as charities. Stop opaque ‘unincorporated associations’ funnelling dark money into politics. Make parties check where the money actually comes from. Are they willing to?

Hearing Sopel mention illegal immigration on the News Agents, a reminder: The term 'irregular' is preferable to 'illegal' migrant because the latter carries a criminal connotation, entering a country in an irregular manner is not a criminal offence but an infraction of administrative regulations.
