There are times when the path of least resistance is the one that leads to total disaster. This increasingly looks like one of those times.

“Trump should drop out not because it would be good for Republicans, or good for Democrats, but because it would be good for America. Everyone who isn’t a cultish devotee of Trump knows it. And every one of them should have the courage to say it.”

I love Biden and yes. “A new-generation candidate could bring a jolt of energy to the ticket. It would give so-called double haters, voters unhappy with the rematch between an 81-year-old president and a 78-year-old former president, a possible new place to go this November.”

It really is a tough choice between spending the next four months generating cringe but effective propaganda about how pretty and tough the first female president who is also Black/Asian is, versus spending those months trying to convince voters dementia isn’t a word in the dictionary

History is so important, and the reason so many don't want it told. When you put together the stories, from Colonial times to the present, with data points like Wilmington and Tulsa, white supremacy becomes a through-line that, rather than an aberration, is a force we always must monitor and resist.

Biden, besides being a good man, has been a truly consequential president. He deserves to be remembered as the leader who saved the country from Trump in 2020, lifted us from the dark days of the Covid pandemic, passed critical legislation .. and, in the end, knew when and how to say goodbye.

asking Democrats to show MAGA-style devotion to their leader is a dubious strategy both ethically and practically. There is nothing to admire in the way Republicans have fallen in line behind Trump; it’s been a moral catastrophe.

The story of Election 2024 is obviously “will the villainous Trump return to destroy democracy once and for all?” Almost no one - Republicans included - denies this narrative. But the media’s refusal to participate makes it feel more out of “narrative integrity” than journalistic.
