with all public discourse now based entirely on ad engagement, op/ed sections are now just troll farms pretending to be heady debate
I suspect at some point we (myself included) need to develop an immune response so we stop taking the bait

The largely silent ad, which will reportedly air in battleground states across the country, features a sequence of headshots depicting politicians, former Trump White House officials, journalists, and seemingly random average Americans with big red X’s over their faces.

It does make clear that what they want is a show, not anything that's politically useful or democratically advantageous.

If you’re digging it, more power to you. Six episodes in and I’m still not sure what Headland’s pitch to Lucasfilm even was. Like KENOBI is bad but I understand how and why that got made.

No full midweek update this week as I recover from some nasty bug that laid me low the past four days, but I wanted to get a new issue out, and I can finally articulate my problem with 'The Acolyte.'

I don't know, maybe I could tell myself some fun little story about how I'm a real hero for abstaining or voting third party, but I also understand that the person who gets the most votes wins, and it's a two-party system. It's not particularly heroic to let a convicted felon become President.

At this point, I'm too tired to get wound up in the Replace/Keep Biden debate, which is entirely predicated on predicting how swing voters will behave as if I have secret information no one has. I still believe replacement carries its own risks, but I'm supporting the Democrat. The End.

I know I can feel my strength returning because I want to write hundreds of words about how frustrating I find THE ACOLYTE, a show that still feels like a rough draft on the way to an interesting concept.

You know, I bet “Shrek 5” is a rare answer considering it’s a movie that doesn’t exist.

Robert Towne’s contribution to some of our most important movies is undeniable. But also if you read THE BIG GOODBYE (and you should), his professional and personal legacy is complicated.

Finally watching THE BEEKEEPER (it’s on Prime) and I’m kind of amazed we’re not getting more of these kinds of DEATH WISH-but-with-scammers-instead-of-street-thugs. It’s soooooo satisfying.

Out of curiosity, since SCOTUS just declared anything the President does is legal, doesn’t that make the court incredibly vulnerable to anything the President wants to do them?

In revisiting the show for [PLUG] my book, Back to the Island, out Sept. 20 (order now) [/PLUG], I genuinely became SO SAD for what we've lost. Yes, that show had some STINKER episodes, but the space it had to tell its story! The beautiful production! The ambition!!!

/7 Justice Roberts smug and superior dismissal of the dissents’ concerns seems to come to us via time warp from some time that never knew Trump. The danger of lawlessness he poses are manifest — he and his followers brag of them. Only a liar or fool would dismiss them.

Not to rip off @quinnae.com's book, but: Change is made by movements of people fighting for or against something. It will probably not be accomplished by posting. It is in the interest of social media sites -- even this one! -- to make you think nothing can be changed, so you keep on posting.

it feels like the whiteness of big political media spaces right now is having a big effect on how people are thinking about the debate. eg I have seen relatively little discussion of trump's "black jobs" comment, which immediately exploded on black twitter

If Biden steps aside and a younger candidate comes in, totally dominates, and wins the election, I will happily eat my words. The fact that we can’t even agree on who the younger candidate would be does not inspire confidence.
