that's the thing about patriarchy that gets overlooked is that it's not so much men vs women it's the patriarch vs all else, including subordinate men. like this line here gives it all away: "He was running the show and damned if he was going to listen to me."

Look at that list of things he recommends patients do *to avoid being killed by their own doctors * Not only is it ridiculous to expect someone critically ill be able to do all that, telling us not to be called a “difficult patient” is like telling us not to breathe. That shit is not in our control

Yes doctors have god complexes in this country. Even when you tell them what you want they often times just write you off. I was 25 with a slipped disk from an injury and they refused to do anything about it. I was in so much pain and they kept telling me to go home and sleep it off.

Most important advice he gave was to get the risk management people involved relative to quality of care. Each hospital has a compliance officer, usually a physician.

I’m in Canada and this kind of thing happens here too. We had an experience where a doctors ego nearly killed my spouse. Another doctor happened to intervene and managed to transfer my spouse to another hospital for a “test” and once there said “I’m keeping you here.” He saved their life.

Doctors have become nearly useless for many people. Either because of lack of access to them, misogyny and racial bias that leaves them utterly incompetent for many conditions, or because their egos are prioritized over everything else.

There are many people who shouldn’t be doctors, but, in the US, if you want to be a doctor, it’s nearly impossible for someone to stop you. For profit and Caribbean med schools will accept anyone, med schools never fail anyone, residencies rarely fire anyone, medical boards rarely strip licenses.
