No matter how impeccable you think your logic is, if you reach the conclusion “it’s okay to commit treason as long as you’re doing your job”, you need to go back and do it again, because you got something wrong.

Biden as Claudius (very capable, does a lot for his people but is under-appreciated, makes critical missteps though), and now we are poised for Trump to play the part of Nero (and burn everything down).

We are reenacting the first part of the Roman Empire … with W as Augustus (grabbing power and declaring war to avenge his father), Obama as Tiberius (pretty ok, well-loved, takes things seriously but is ultimately still part of the system), Trump as Caligula (completely batshit) …

I still remember in 2017 he had a behind-closed-doors discussion with Schumer and Pelosi about DACA and came out agreeing with them for a short while, until his handlers got back in his ears again. He is silly-putty and do whatever you ask as long as he feels powerful and is flattered doing it.

Is this because of a self-coup, or because we somehow repealed the 22nd Amendment, or because it was Ivanka’s turn—I mean, term?

I wouldn’t say anything nice about Rehnquist, but Roberts has definitely been worse (all the while acting so concerned about the Roberts Court legacy - and then he drops Snyder, Loper, and Jarkesy on three consecutive days).

It probably is in Ohio, since they have a Miami County and John Scalzi lives very close to it (maybe. Could also be Indiana or Kansas. It’s definitely not in Florida since they don’t have a Miami County. 🙂

Nobody ever actually does think of the children. The real children, that is, not the idealized ones in their mind who always act exactly as they think children are supposed to act.

Good point - I tend to think of it as fairly carbon-neutral but that depends very much on replacing the trees you cut down… which the Neolithic people clearly did not, since the British Isles used to be a lot more wooded (including Salisbury Plain, which was a forest!).

The Neolithic builders of Stonehenge didn’t contribute anything to global warming or pollution, and never saw a drop of petrol (gasoline). I say we leave them out of this.

I think it depends on your definition of “better” - better for what? It uses less energy to put a bigger “swing” in your thermostats, and this can be thought of as the ultimate “swing”. But if everybody does it, the system will be more taxed at (say) 6pm than otherwise.

But that’s not the source. The sax-playing and the voice come from different sources (the sax has been identified) but you can hear the first note or two of the sax in this song. This is a remix of the ubiquitous clip, not the original.

The sax playing is Caleb Arredondo youtu.be/5EqlFo4_ZJM but the voice is from somewhere else. I suppose the voice could
be original to that commercial but I think it more likely the commercial is riffing off the ubiquity of this sound clip.

This looks very much like the work of Ferenc Mere, a Hungarian taxidermist who made a whole collection of “human frogs”, many of which are now exhibited in a museum in Split, Croatia, called “Froggyland”. The timing seems about right too; he did his work in the 1910s…

I’ve seen a lot of mockery of this, which makes no sense. People (including me) loved Howard Dean’s 50-state strategy and what is this but that on a local scale? Each Democrat running, even in the reddest district, has the chance to boost turnout or persuade people. That is vital! Why mock it??

When I was a kid I built a seismometer for a science fair project and it could indeed pick up trucks driving by. Nothing about this Swift story is even all that remarkable to me (gotta assume professional seismometers are far more sensitive than my contraption!)
