I'm catching up on #CephalopodWeek content (since I didn't have much online time this week) and this ink-terview is FASCINATING! I did not know about pygmy sperm whale ink 🤯 nor that melanin binds to heavy metals so ink helps remove toxins! 🦑🧪

I just spend two amazing days bumming around Roman ruins in the south of Italy, so my contributions to #CephalopodWeek are these two absolutely stunning more-than two-thousand-year-old mosaics from the apodyterium (changing room) of the women’s baths at Herculaneum

Blanket Octopus is another returning species from our old roster. With its wide, blanket-like appendages, it has one of the most iconic octopus silhouettes out there. 🐡 🎨

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 2/8
Bigfin Squid, one of the most striking squids, was the first squid included in our roster.
The earliest specimens were found dead in a bad shape. They lacked the extremely long appendages, hence the name "bigfin". 🐡 🎨

WEIRD + EXCITING thing going on. Folks in CT found a bobtail squid living in shallow seagrass. Spencer Nyholm told me this morning & we both got VERY excited about it. We'd expect to see those bobtails in much deeper water. (This pic is a bobtail, different species) (1/?)

It's the time of year when dogs start going in the water in many places, so just be aware that if your dog has a topical flea treatment, it can wipe out the invertebrate ecosystem in whole ponds.

Story time: one time I found a new species unknown to science during #InverteFest in Dec 2021.
This thing that looks like a weird, long spider is called a schizomid, also known as spricket (short for spider cricket). Schizomids are obscure, understudied arachnids most people have never heard of.
