It's been great to participate in various activities put on by the brand new Society for Modeling & Theory in Population Biology (smtpb.org). We have now had a few months of events (cehg.stanford.edu/mtpb). If you missed them, check out these recordings: www.birs.ca/events/2024/...

We have a growth forming on a Chamaecrista fasciculata plant in the greenhouse. Does anyone know what this is? Is it just runaway cell division?

I miss my friends there, and I miss my friends who made an account here but kind of didn't put in the effort to curate a good experience for themselves. I stay over there mostly for the news, both global and science related.

Observation: I've been posting the same things on Twitter & on Bluesky for a while. There is almost always more engagement here, maybe because you can tag into feeds, or the algorithm works against people there, or maybe users are more active here. I still wish we were all in one place.

Hydnellum peckii, the bleeding tooth fungus, can be found at the base of many evergreen trees in the Americas or parts of Europe.
The young fruiting bodies produce red guttation ('sap') that has anti-coagulant properties similar to heparin that, while not very toxic, can be used as a dye.
