I think one problem with the green energy transition (incl. green power + electrification) is that people don't know how far technology has advanced. So they think the transition is more difficult and expensive than it really is. The reverse is also sometimes true, but less often, IMO. 1/

I'm thrilled to share my new LPE blog on insurance, where on take on the prevailing media & policy narrative that the answer to the US's home insurance crisis is protecting insurance companies. Instead, we must focus on ensuring housing safety & affordability.

“Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases… In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths.”

Many fires erupting across northern CAtoday amid Red Flag conditions at the beginning of what may become a historically severe/long heatwave. Most immediately threatening fire appears to be #ThompsonFire near Oroville. Mandatory evacs now for portions of Oroville proper. #CAwx

Orphaned wells are a climate and public health nightmare. The oil industry continues to dump *billions* in cleanup costs onto taxpayers and is fighting reform efforts.

Fantastic reporting by Mark Olalde for @propublica.bsky.social on an issue that rarely gets the attention it deserves:

Early signs of potentially major heatwave around 4th of July centered on Northern CA, and this event could bring hot temperatures all the way to the coast (uncommon for early Jul). Early hints at potential for some record-breaking heat & very high grass/brush fire risk. #CAwx

“The way the decision was made was notable: The justices took up the case on an emergency basis while it is still playing out in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Usually, the high court waits for proceedings to finish in lower courts before taking up such challenges.”

If more research fails to show durable benefits or demonstrates harms, then "seawater restoration" like "natural climate solutions" or "enhanced biological pump" becomes a regrettable and misleading label that nevertheless persists in marketing/PR.

Additional research is needed to know whether "seawater restoration" is effective when the full scope of activities are accounted for, and unintended ecological/social impacts are acceptable, correct?

An illustrative if extreme example: methane burns cleaner than coal, with lower CO2 emissions, so it must be good and we can embrace it as "natural gas". Coal is definitely bad, but methane is also turning out to be really bad and not the "bridge fuel" solution it was sold to be.

Great point. This is why I worry about value-laden descriptors. These are problematic when ideas that sound great in principal don't pan out with additional study. That seems especially important if they will be commercialized/monetized.

What we (nominally) paid for: reduced climate pollution, clean energy incentives. We we get: more methane, more CO2, additional pollution, more fossil fuel infrastructure, no clean energy. 7/7

Net result 2: Tax incentives meant to promote clean energy instead fund expansion of facilities to produce hydrogen from methane, resulting in release of both methane and CO2 produced from it's combustion. 6/n

Net result 1: Coal mines and dairies get paid generously for ongoing methane pollution by capturing a little bit of it - it doesn't matter how much they release, just how much they capture. 5/n

These methane offsets can be bought and used anywhere to qualify hydrogen produced from much larger quantities of methane as "clean" and therefore eligible for rich tax credits. 4/n

A small proportion of this methane is captured and sold as offsets. These "negative emissions" offsets are lucrative to incentivize capture of methane, which has very high short-term radiative forcing (~80x as much as CO2 over 20 yrs). 3/n

Coal mines, dairies, and others (shale oil fields, refineries?) release vast quantities of methane without penalty. 2/n
