Just regular fountain pen ink watered down! I have a ton of samples so have been experimenting and it's so fab for this kind of gradient.

Some folks w/ interesting and gorgeous ideas for community groups are starting to apply! Is there a way that you yearn to gather with others? A focus you want to share with other people but don't know how to get started or worry that its too much work? I have ideas about that:

It is very, very difficult to convince people it matters when everyone from the president to their family doctor tells them it doesn't. The stats on excess death and mass disability say different tho.

There are also multiple labs working on pan-sars vaccine that would help us get away from chasing variants. The scientists are working hard, but as you say the funding/distribution/public ed portion of the program is MIA.

OTOH I took a very long (ten weeks) workshop that involved some high wire emotional risk and reflection and found that incredibly provocative and useful. It's not the emotional confrontation that bothers me, it's the soft, facile form of it.

I feel intensely bored and irritated. I am simply not interested. I want practical skills, I can take care of the emotional exploration on my own. It's what I do all damn day as a writer!

Maybe it's because everything is so high stakes right now? I feel very impatient with this kind of slow messing around. I feel bored and irritated with it. I am aware that boredom is a form of resistance--remember, I used to facilitate this stuff! And yet.

I'm interested in why and when this happened to me, but for now I only know that if I have to fill out one more body chart or give a color to my feeling, or draw my demon or whatever I will throw up. It used to be my whole milieu and I just can't do it anymore!

I used to organize and facilitate these kinds of workshops so no shade to anyone who is out there enjoying them or even relying on them but somewhere along the line I completely lost my tolerance for soft-therapy art and writing workshops. (Genuine emotional risk after slow building of trust is OK.)

It is really, really a problem to have to rely on tiny sites that can't afford to send people overseas or pay folks to do research. If that's all we've got for now I can see that it makes sense to help them grow sans billionaires, but it kind of sucks!

Yeah, I am uninterested in opinion newsletters for the most part. I subscribe to plenty of newsletters but I've tried to unsubscribe from anything on substack that involves money (not completely done yet but close). I'm much more interested in supporting ecosystems of journalism than individuals.

Are any of you getting a policewoman screen from Google for certain websites? It used to be that they would warn me and I could continue on in but now I’m completely blocked.

I LOVE teaching novel workshops. There’s nothing more satisfying than helping someone navigate that particular marathon. Unfortunately, most workshops are geared for short stories. That’s why I started offering my Whole Novel Workshop a few years ago.

It finally happened: I went into my spiel about having friends with Long Covid to explain why I would need someone to mask up and they said, "Oh, yeah. I had Long Covid for months after I got Covid this January. I'm better now but still resting. I mask everywhere. "

I love this idea, tho maybe the ad should be somewhere besides the NYT? :) I feel like that's what's missing for me--an actual group statement and list of demands. Unless the goal is to kill the paper altogether which...I'm not sure is possible.

How about pooling funds for full-page ads? Maybe with scorecards for how often their pundits are wrong on things, or all the awful stuff Trump wants to do that the NYT isn't reporting? Accountability in their own paper (since they can't be bothered with an ombudsperson)

TM is so weird to me, tbh. They do some terrific longform reporting and then lots and lots of glossy boosterism.

They have said for years the plan is to be the paper for everyone, but look at CNN when they tried to court the Fox News viewer. Now they are looking to lay people off.

The thing about still being subscribed is they can interpret that as "not dissatisfied enough to unsub" while they try to build out and capture people who can only be gotten by distorting the work they create and present. And maybe not even then.

The Texas Trib was one of my disappointments. I still sub but holy hell did they make some bad decisions about restricting reporting.

It feels v similar to the arguments around Twitter, I agree. And obvs I left! Do you mind saying where you are subscribing instead? (Fine if not.) Part of my problem is that I kept subscribing to and then losing venues to the fascist slide.

I honestly don’t know and don’t know what that venue would be? I ended up subscribing to a lot of journalist’s substacks and we know how that went! I subscribed to local papers and they got bought up or slid right themselves. I think this is beyond individual action. We need a different framework.

Also where is that other mythical paper? I really want a rec. Do you mean something like Mother Jones? I support the Texas Tribune for that reason but they have slid rightwards now as well. I end up supporting individual journalists but there are serious limitations to that structure.

They are definitely not listening and will never listen to me as an individual and I would not expect them to do so. But I’m not sure they give af about my cancellation either. I feel like we’re missing an organizational step in here somewhere.
