Fascinating considerations about bird flu- could older people be better protected due to prior exposure to similar strains or might that imprint immunity to prior strain & make it less effective? But as we age our immune system declines. Important questions as we prep for poss bird flu pandemic 🧪

This is so cool! Frog & amphibian have been dessimated by the disease chytridiomycosis, caused by a fungal pathogen. Researchers have realised that the fungi is heat intolerant so little brick saunas for frogs can help kill the fungi! Recovered frogs more resistant to further infxn 🧪

As someone who suffers from migraines on occasion including auras it was fascinating to read this research in mice suggesting that changes in brain activity alter cerebrospinal fluid proteome that can then trigger nerve receptors and migraine. I also never appreciated what aura was! 🧪

Great update from @chrischirp.bsky.social with important points for practical considerations our new government can do to be more infection resilient ie addressing ventilation, waste water monitoring, long Covid treatment & investment in vaccines that may be more robust & long lasting 🧪

I've written a longer piece going into the wider determinants of health, how these determinants have worsened over the years and how crucial it is for governments to consider health in *every* policy.

And even a bit on the manifestos..!

Just reflecting that considering I live in a Tory constituency (was a swing seat with Labour 10 y or so ago but solidly Tory since)-there has been a dearth of Tory effort in campaigning -0 in person& minimal leaflets. Nothing from other parties at all but huge efforts from labour

The 14th Amendment says if you were involved in an insurrection you can't be president. SCOTUS said they won't allow anyone to enforce that because of reasons they made up. The Constitution doesn't say the president is immune from criminal law. SCOTUS decided he is because of reasons they made up.

I fear for democracy in the States with this, it’s pretty nuts that unelected people he appointed and people known to support his ideas get to decide such a thing with such repercussions for everyone. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

The cost of people moving to the UK for research has skyrocketed in UK and wildly out of step with any ambition to be a research innovator superpower. Let’s hope this is addressed in next government whoever that may be 🧪

Fascinating work esp for those with spinal injuries revealing role for immune cells and astrocytes in injury repair, declining repair function with age and potential for targeted repair. Huge caveat is its in mice but may hint at future directions and hope. 🧪

Worth saying that nearly half of UK adults take vitamin supplements! However , with saying vitamin B12 can be beneficial in some vegan/veggie diets and vitamin D can help in winter months when less sunlight. Original research here:

There has been proliferation of so called wellness products/lifestyles. Notably some proponents rely on multivitamin supplements to make up for rather minimal diets. Large meta-study looking at 390,124 healthy adults over 20y period showed no benefit in longevity at all- possibly a detriment! 🧪

Given #mpox is in the news (from 2022):

"It sends quite a message that the global community was more focused on contingencies to contain a hypothetical outbreak of an eradicated virus, smallpox, rather than putting those resources to work tackling an ongoing situation in African countries."

This is very concerning as a more virulent and deadly strain of mpox has emerged in DRC- a country that lacks smallpox vaccines. This is yet another example of how zoonotic viruses infect us and mutate all of which is made more likely due to habitat loss.🧪🌍
