Artist Hitomi Terasawa drew a meticulous cross-sectioned rendering of Hong Kong's infamous Kowloon Walled City before it was razed in 1994. Now we have rare scans revealing the inner workings of the labyrinth-like metropolis.

Political reactions to major infectious disease outbreaks tend to oscillate between "robust" and "conservative". So, given how recent covid was, this should tell you a lot about the attitude to #influenza #H1N1 in dairy cattle.

It feels odd to say it, but I needed this refresher of just how bad things have been. Their vandalism has been on such a scale that it has been hard to stop their latest damage from overshadowing past messes.

"Bryant’s great contribution is that he clearly shows there is no such thing as that “better America”. In fact, American exceptionalism – the enduring belief, to put it crudely, that the US is the best country in the world – “has blinded it to the ways in which it is unusually bad”."

I do find the "why are you so quiet?" argument a bit confusing. It's not that things have gone unsaid, it's that few are interested in listening because what we have to say doesn't bolster lazy narratives.
